Seeing actual images in place of thumbnails is a function of your operating system.

Keeping the last thing you typed is available. In X, you just have a Remember text button on the text input tool.

On X3 (if that's what you meant) the remember text button is just to the right of the Create As dialog on the text tool bar (where all the kerning and such is located).
To get the text to appear in a text box in X3 hold the shift key while clicking where you want the text. There's also a remember text button there too.
