Creating simple DVD Menu

Post by vcator »

I'm trying to create the simplest of DVD menu's . . . nothing fancy . . . just a relevant background, a title, 3 chapter headings and play buttons.

I've created an 8 minute sequence comprising of 3 chapters all in 1 project file.
All I want is a relevant jpeg background, nothing fancy.
A title for the DVD
3 chapter headings
. . . and play buttons.

Any tips/suggestions ?

[this seems like I've stepped into a program created as an afterthought by a completely different set of developers . . . . more bugs in it than in Sherwood Forest]

- Do I have to ADD MEDIA or VSP even if I'm already in a project ?
- The clips it has selected are black . . . double clicking doesn't view them, or allow editing (all greyed out)
- If I Auto-add chapters, or select by time, VS crashes :-(
- I can add the background (but neither the JPEG or MP3 saves), and I can HIDE OBJECT (tulip) . . . but I can't get rid of a big black box
- If I go CUSTOMIZE, the Chapter text says "enter text here" . . . how do you do that ? If you click on it, nothing happens. Right Hand click allows you to change font, not the text . . . durhhhh

Much appreciate any suggestions

Hi
There should be no problem in entering the burner module with a VSP,
although I prefer to create a video file of my projects then starting a new project Share Create Disc ¡V Add Video
Add / Edit Chapters from this first window.
Next
Select the menu view from below the preview screen, work on the chapter menu first.
Select the gallery Thumbnail option, probably the easiest to work with.
Then select one of the thumbnail templates.
You should see 3 thumbnails on the screen
Switch to ¡¥Edit¡¦ Tab
Uncheck ¡¥motion menu¡¦
Click add background image/video¡Xbrowse your hard drive for an image.
Do the same for a sound file. (if you want your own sound.)
Double click the text (my title) on screen should allow you to change the text, does this work.
Same for the thumbnail names.
Ok
The above should work without problems.
If not then we need more info regarding the type of video/project properties etc.
What version of VS are you using?
Have you updated DirextX, see the announcement at the top of this forum.
There is also an update for X2 see top of forum.

Thanks for the reply.

So I started a new project. In the SHARE tab, added a video file I created from the project I've been working on.

I've got a single black thumbnail in the bottom left.

I go into Add/Edit Chapter, and the only option it gives me is AUTO ADD CHAPTERS . . . the others are greyed out.

I click that and I'm offered 2 out of 4 options . . . . ADD CHAPTERS at fixed time intervales or AUTO SCENE DETECTION . . . . either one crashes VS completely.

I'm using X2Pro, with the November update 12.0.98.1Pro

To activate the manual chapter marker, you simply drag the jog slider below the chapter screen preview screen to the right. The first frame on the screen is already Chapter 1. So you drag the slider to the right and the program then 'realises' that you are going to insert your own chapter points. You drag the slider to the point where you want Chapter 2 to start, then click on the now active 'Add Chapter' button...

Greyed out jog slider

Post by vcator »

I must be exceptionally dim. Apologies for being thick.

You say "simply drag the jog slider. . . .". But the jog slider is greyed out. How do you get the jog slider 'active' ?

I've got 1 thumbnail (blue) bottom left, the name of the project.

If I go to ADD/EDIT chapter, the only option is AUTO, and of those options, both crash the software.

If you are on the Add/Edit Chapter page, where the only option available is Auto, can you see the first frame of your video in the preview screen of *that* page (not the original page in which you inserted your one video)? If, I would be surprised that you could not use the job slider under *that* preview screen.

But if you can't, then the next thing I would do would be to load the latest version of Microsoft DirectX . The current one is dated November
2008 and can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6jj2lw Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular -- and now also in X2 -- which appear linked to Windows updates. The menu preview, 'building review
graph' and other problems in the burning module seem to be amongst them.

Note that
DirectX is not included in the usual pattern of Windows automatic updates. It has to be done every so
often by the user manually. So unless you have recently done this, you are probably still using the
original, non-updated version of DirectX which came with your computer.

I appreciate your help on this.

I went to the DirectX download site, as per your link, hit DOWNLOAD.

It downloaded and prompted RUN or SAVE . . . I hit RUN.
What then happens is the Winzip prompt asks for a directory.
Accidentally, I chose DESKTOP, and although it put a ton of files on my desktop, it failed to install properly.
I downloaded again, this time I created a DirectX director myself, under PROGRAM FILES, and when prompted, installed the files into the directory I'd just created. Same thing. It failed.

So I've gone back and found this link, and this one installed OK.

AND GREAT NEWS . . . . I've got JOG commands. So, onwards and upwards :-) Thanks again for the help. I hope the link above it helpful to other people.

Glad it's working for you now..:) :)

With DirectX, it does unzip a ton of files. I've made the same mistake as you, not specifying a folder to extract them to. One time and you remember the next time to create a folder. However after they are extracted, find the DXSETUP.exe file and run it.

Hi

once you have edited a menu template you can save it.
The menu is saves to your favourites in the menu gallery.

Photo Impact from Corel can create menus.
