.mkv and .mov imports

I've poked around the postings and I can't find a satisfactory way to import and burn these 2 files using VS X2. I've used the "super" file converter program and burned some DVD's but they come out screwed up some way or other.

I converted them to .avi but the audio sync is widely off in the QT .mkv file and the video is very jerky and erratic in the other file. The files are Revelations and Reign of the Fallen respectively. They are are fan flicks so I'm not stealing anything.

So does anyone have any ideas or successful experience with .mkv or .mov files and VS X2?

Welcome to the forums,

I've not any experience with QT movies, because they can be very difficult to edit and convert, so they can be burned onto a DVD. Since you're going to burn a DVD, minimize the number of conversions. DVD uses MPEG-2, so instead of converting them first to avi, which then will need to be recoded to MPEG-2, just convert them to MPEG-2 and insert them into VS. This may help keep things in sync.

If the frame rate for the source video files are say 15 fps, and after editing you burn a DVD, which the frame rate needs to be 25 fps (PAL) or 29.97 fps (NTSC), VS will need to invent additional frames. The obverse is the same, where the source clips may be 30 fps, VS would need to remove frames so that the video will meet DVD specs. This will not only through things out of sync, but produce a video that is not very smooth.

Frame sizes need to be considered too. Most internet video clips can have weird frame sizes. In order for the video to be burnt to DVD, the frame sizes must fall within the DVD standards, which typically are 720 x 576 (PAL), or 720 x 480 (NTSC). If the source clips have different frame sizes, VS will increase or decrease whatever the need be, so the DVD video meets DVD specs. This would affect the quality of the video, as it may appear stretched or squished up.
