Video Studio 8 And Above Question...

Hi

I have not been on here for a long, long time and the last software I used for my video editing was Ulead Video Studio 8. I will be editing Hi8 digital tapes and DV tapes. In some readings on here, it sounds like Video Studio 9 was the best for keeping the video and audio in sync (although I always followed the procedures in VS8 and never had any problems).

My question is I was a newbie back then and still am but I knew how to edit my tapes with the VS8 and felt comfortable doing it but I know in VS 9 they had that rubber band editing feature which sounded very useful. Of all the newer versions since VS8 and what is currently new right now on here, which version would you suggest I get? Can I even get the Video Studio 9 (full edition) or is there someone on here who wants to sell that version to me? Thanks in advance to all!

Welcome back to the forums,

The rubber-band audio adjustment is continued in all the consecutive versions including the current release Corel VS X2, Pro and Ultimate (which is version 12). Can you still purchased VS9? The only place to purchase it would be possibly Ebay. In fact the only version you can purchase from Corel would be the current version.

It is very risky to buy software on Ebay. It is common for SE (Simple or Special Edition), and pirated Try Before You Buy versions being sold. The software would not be eligible for support (from Corel,) and probably even if you found a full version, may already be registered, preventing you from registering it.

With analog Hi-8 video, version 11+ started seeing the problem with being able to capture analog. Corel fixed this with one of their patches, however this found it's way back into version 12. To work around this, simply use another program or VS8 to capture your video, then use VS to edit.

Starting with VS10 plus, more overlay tracks were introduced. VS11 Plus allowed cutting the clips placed in overlay tracks, and finally VS12 allows using transitions in overlay tracks. VS12 also includes a video paint feature. The big move from VS10 to current is the ability to edit the high-def video formats, such as HDV, and AVCHD. However editing these formats require a very powerful PC.

With VS9 through 12, I've had no audio sync issues editing DV. I've always captured my analog Hi-8 to DV format as well, using one of my Digital-8 camcorders as pass-through A-D converter. Again with VS11 and 12, this is hampered and capture is aborted. So using a third-party capture program such as WinDV, or VS8 gets around this.

I might add a word of caution about buying VS from a private person. If they already have registered it, you would not be able to. Also the EULA states that if the seller purchased an upgrade, then the version they upgraded from, must be included in the transfer. This means that if a person sells their upgraded version of say 11+ from version 8, they must also include version 8. Then to transfer the registration with Corel is a real pain, and in my opinion not worth the trouble to get it transferred.

The current release is really not that expensive. Since you have VS8 you are eligible for the upgrade prices, which is probably less than what you originally paid for VS8..

I also have a Digital8 cam and have v12 (X2), although I must admit I don't use it to capture. When capturing the preview screen is not smooth, and there is always a delay from the time I press capture to when it actually starts capturing, which makes the whole process very difficult. I now use v10 to capture and v12 to edit. I have mentioned this a couple of times here but it seems I am the only one to have this problem. Could be an issue with my older cam or older pc.

Anyway, I would recommend you upgrading to v12 (X2 Pro). Of course there are cosmetic differences and editing enhancements, but the workflow is basically the same (small learning curve).

Just so I understand this correctly. It is OK, if I have Video Studio 8 AND VS X2 installed on my computer at the SAME TIME without causing any conflicts? If this is true, I should capture my footage with VS8. I then should open VS X2 and do my editing with this program, even though I captured it using VS8?

Last question (for now...LOL). I can use my exact work flow that I did on VS8 with the VS X2? Thanks again for all of your help!

Yes you can have multiple versions of VS on your machine.

As for the capturing, I stated that I seem to be the only one having my particular problem. You may have no problem at all capturing with v12. The issue Ron spoke about regarded analog cams, not digital cams.

He meant the three lines of programs -- it was meant to show that you can have multiple versions with no problems. No link. All there...

Afaik VS x2 installs in a completely separate location to VS 8 up to 11.
VS X2 installs in a folder called Corel whereas VS 8 installed in Ulead VideoStudio
There should be no problems installing additional VS programs. Just install the oldest first.
You can only run/open one program at a time.
Check your computers capabilities for running VS X2. Update your profile to include your PC spec¡¦
Running X2 may require a faster more efficient pc.
Download the trial version and give it a go.

Finally the workflow you use for VS 8 is the same as for all versions of VS, although the look, the layout of the editing windows may have changed.
The tabs across the top from ¡¥Capture¡¦ to ¡¥Share¡¦ remain the same.
