VS9 project preview hangs

Post by zetlandpaul »

Hello guys. First post.

I have been using VS9 for some time. Mostly for home video from mini DV source and slideshow from digital and scanned stills. No problems with any part of the workflow from capture through to DVD burning until now.

Now I cannot perform a project preview. Single clips preview ok but not the whole project. VS just hangs. I can reproduce this with a new project and only one unedited colour clip on the timeline, i.e. no video, extra audio or transitions. Therefore, I surmise, unrelated to latest captured clips or workflow per se.

Preview settings are for instant playback and preview window.

Last time I used VS was about 6 months ago. So I guess the obvious question is what has changed. Possibly some XP updates, drivers or similar? Hardware is unchanged and there is no shortage of memory or disk space.

I have updated DirectX to the latest v9 level and set Data Execution Prevention except for the VS .exe file. Both these have been mentioned in this forum in the past. I have also performed a repair of VS using the orginal CD.

Does anyone have any experience of this sort of problem and if so could they point me in the right direction regarding diagnosis and possible corrective action?

Thanks in anticipation

I know you say you have tried a repair, but have you tried a reinstall?

I have tried uninstall, reinstall + patch; no change.
I have tried different video drivers, including bog standard vga: no change.
I am really puzzled why VS won't preview even a single 7 second solid colour.
BTW there is no issue playing clips outside VS, e.g. with Windows Media player.

As I still have VS9 installed (to be removed and not reinstalled when I reformat my system), I've been playing around with it trying to replicate this problem. Sadly I can not. It's installed on my XP machine, all current updates, including SP3, which causes several problems anyway.

Try doing a complete un-install/re-install. Ulead programs leave a lot of files behind. So just doing a simple add/remove programs from the control panel and then re-installing may not correct some issues. Instructions can be found here : Re-installation of Ulead Products

Thanks for looking. I did remove the old version following the instructions about deleting other folders etc.

I've installed a trial version of X2 and that works fine. Perhaps it is time to move on.

Hi

Its going back a while, but I had problems with Quicktime 7 and VS 9, crashed or froze most times.
Started when I trialled VS 10 that had QT7
Reverting to QT 6 cured the problem. Never did find out why.

All seems ok now as I run the latest versions.???????????????

Oh yes.. I'd forgot about the QT player problems. It is a mystery how I have no problems now, when I'm running a version that used to cause those problems with VS9...
