Anyway to convert AVCHD to other format succesfully?

Hello, I have VS Pro X2 Latest patch installed; I've been importing video from my camera (Panasonic SD9) for some time, but just recently decided to edit the footage, but no matter the output the video ends up looking horrible, with artifacts all over the place, I've tried wmv, mpeg2, HDV, everything looks the same, even creating a trimmed clip to AVCHD format with same properties and with Smart-render ON and OFF, same result. Only happens with videos from my camera (h.264 in mts or m2ts extension).
I've converted a file with HD Writer (camera software) to SD mpeg, and it looks perfect, no artifacts at all, and it did it very quickly also, but of course I want to retain HD quality, and SD is the only option the program gives.
If VS can't do it, would there be a way to use the encoder, or compressor or whatever the name it is from HD writer and tell VS to use it instead of its own?
Also, the videos from my camera play smoothly on VS, just the output looks bad :S
Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

It's me again, I remember several months ago I was able to convert the videos with good results, I don't know what's up with my pc, I uninstalled a lot of software that might be interfering with VS, software like cyberlink dvd, divx converter, and a bunch of video software, what should I do, maybe I messed up the codecs for h.264 or something, is there a way to repair the codecs??

Uninstall all the 3rd party Codecs. Run a disk cleanup and as a last resort do a restore.

Have you checked the FIELD ORDER? The AVCHD file from SD9 is UPPER FIELD FIRST. Are you sure you select the right FIELD ORDER i.e. UPPER FIELD FIRST for the output file? If you use LOWER FIELD FIRST, the image will be blurry and have artifacts. Besides, you may also want to check if the compression rate (or quality) is 100%

Yes, I always matched the output properties to the original file, I reinstalled Vista and the problem went away, so it was propably a codec issue, I had installed a lot of programs and I guess it crashed it, thanks to all!
