Ken,
A video that you designate as First Play is not allowed Chapters. First Play video clips are suppose to be short clips that act as teasers, openings, or something that you want your audience to see first before being presented with any menus.

OK,
Perhaps I have used the wrong term, when I said Ist play I meant
the looping image that shows when you first insert the finished DVD.I had not selected "use !st clip as intro video",does not this clip, being the 1st
one in the media clip list play first from when ever the DVD starts unless you select a chapter anyway? All I want to have is the play all and chapter
menus showing with their clips being displaid as they were when I added
them and they all showed in the media clip list. Also why did not my imported image show, or how do I get it to show.

Hi Kenneth
How many video clips are you using to burn the DVD.
Just the one or more than one?
A main menu is created showing a thumbnail/link for each video added.
Chapters.
When you add chapters a second menu, a sub-menu is created.
You can view this menu by choosing the option immediately below the preview screen.
(currently displayed menu)
This menu page is edited in the same manner as the first page.
If you have several, a lot of links, separate pages/menus may be created.
From the ¡¥Customise¡¦ option you can select how many thumbnails/links you have per menu/page.
The default is about 3, but you can select more depending on which template you are using.
How many chapters did you create?
Extra option
When complete you should have two menu pages, a Main Menu and a Chapter Menu.
If the Main Menu contains only one Link/Thumbnail then its of little use and can be ¡¥hidden¡¦
But that¡¦s just a personal choice. (do you need a menu with only one option?)
(under Advanced ¡¥add title menu¡¦) will hide the first.
Playing the DVD will access the chapter menu first.

Kenneth.
First play video.
Place video into player. A short video will play and when it has finished the DVD Menu will appear. On commercial DVD's the first play video is used to display FBI warnings, Warnings from F.A.C.T. (Federation Against Copyright Theft) and so on, plus various trailers for other films.
Background Video.
When you reach the actual DVD Menu you can either have
1. A plain background
2. A still background of a picture (Actually it is the same as item 1)
3. A moving background - this is a background video
Types of DVD Menu.
Root Menu - The main menu that first appears (on most DVD's) unless you deliberately instructed the program not to create one.
Typically this menu would allow you to select which film/program to watch if the DVD contains more than one film/program.
On a commercial DVD it will include things like
1. Play the Film
2. Select Subtitles
3. Select Audio
4. View extra material - such as "The making of..." or "Deleted scenes."
Chapter Menu - If you selected a particular film/program from the
Root Menu then you normally enter a chapter menu so that you can quickly jump to a certain part of the film/program. Perhaps you were watching a film and an unexpected visitor arrived and so you had to turn it off. The chapter menu will help you get back to the point you left off when the unexpected visitor arrived.
VideoStudio includes options to turn off the creation of a:
Root Menu
Chapter Menu
Styles of Menu.
VideoStudio includes 3 styles of menu
1. Thumbnail menu.
Here you get small pictures showing the content of the film/program/chapter point. You have an option for these to be moving or still.
2. Text Only Menu
Here you have a list rather than thumbnails. A typical commercial DVD Root Menu would have
1. Play
2. Bonus Material
3. Subtitles
4. Audio
5. Select Scene
3. Smartscene Menu
This is a sort of cross between a Thumbnail Menu and a Text Only Menu.
Here you (appear) to have ONE thumbnail and several items in a list.
When you move down the list the content of that single thumbnail changes to reflect the item currently selected in the list.
For details of how to create and manipulate these menus please view:

Hi Ken,
I wonder if you are getting the default "Title Menu" - which you may wish to disable.
I'm on the laptop, which only has 11.5, but X2 may be similar. In the window with the "Gallery" and "Edit" tabs, helpfully called "Ulead VideoStudio", like all the other windows in the DVD authoring module

select the "Edit" tab. Click on "Advanced Settings" and then uncheck the default "Add Title Menu".

Menu page.
This is what I will have in VS11+
One video clip (of a vsp project)
Max of 4 chapters
This is what I want
No !st play video
One main menu and the chapters all showing (with moving backgrounds) on one page which will be the !st thing shown when the DVD is inserted. This is to be able to play the whole movie or any one of the chapters and then return to the menu page when the clip has finished.
What happens up to now is that whatever menu template I select and display , Steves 12 thumb
Menu template always ends up on the DVD, how do I get round this?
I realise that chapters are normally sub meus but is there a workround for what I want.

If you don't want the chapters as sub-menus then you must turn off the title menu, as 2Dogs as described above.

Hi Ken
I only have VS 10 but think the process is the same.
Share Create Disc
From the burner module first window I see one video file/clip in the timeline.
I select Add/Edit chapters
This opens another window where I add my chapters, I add another three resulting in 4 in all. (frame zero has to have a chapter point)
I select OK to return to the main window where I see one clip.
NEXT moves me to the Menu window.
Immediately below the preview screen I change to the chapter menu page.
I am about to edit the chapter menu.
From the Gallery top left I select ¡¥Thumbnail Menus¡¦
I see 5 options and choose the one I like.
I see the screen in the preview window showing the new menu.
Unfortunately it only displays 2 thumbnails and I need 4.(later)
I select the ¡¥Edit¡¦ tab adjacent to the Gallery tab.
The left side changes to display the edit panel.
Now I can create my own menu.
I add a Music file, browsing the hard drive to select a suitable sound.
Next I deselect the motion menu, its limited to 30 seconds and my music/song is longer.
A picture or video for the background would be nice, I browse the hard drive to find my images/video files. If I were to use a video I would have created one earlier.
Its looking good but I still have two menu/thumbnails.
But as I am working down the page I select ¡¥Advanced¡¦, the ¡¥Layout¡¦ I don¡¦t need.
Here I can disable the first menu page, I don¡¦t need it as it only contains the one thumbnail. I click Advanced then deselect ¡¥Add Title Menu¡¦
That¡¦s got rid of that but I still see two thumbnails.
I now press the Customize¡K button
A new window opens allowing me a few/many options.
I see a drop down box showing ¡¥Frame¡¦ . I can change this to ¡¥Layout¡¦
The timeline displays the layout options showing the thumbnails in blue.
I scroll across to view the 4 options, I selecting OK returns me to the edit window.
Its looking good with the 4 thumbnails.
I complete the editing by clicking the on-screen text and changing the content.
The last option is to choose the navigation control, this selects how the dvd reacts to being played and if it returns to menu or plays all.
I press the ¡¥Cogwheel¡¦ button to display the Project Settings
I see a new window showing the navigation controls to the bottom. Default is ¡¥Auto repeat when disc playback ends¡K.¡¦ I remove this tick allowing the Clip Playback to be available.
I see two options from the dropdown box, the first ¡¥continue to play next clip¡K.is the one I want.
This will play the dvd from any chapter point to the end.
The second option will play each chapter and then return to menu allowing me to choose another chapter.
But I need the top option continue to play next clip to play all.
I click OK and the window closes.
Once this option has been selected it will remain as is until I change it again, even for further projects.
And now I an ready to burn my disc, but first I hit the remote control to view the menu structure.
I¡¦m happy and hit the Next button to enter the final window.
Well that¡¦s how I do it.

Custom Nav Controls

Trevor,
I followed your detailed advice and all went great except for the following issue.
After clicking on customise and selecting the N004 nav display which has 4
options on it , only 2 showed on the menu, play and fast forward. When I selected
a menu with 4 items in it for 4 chapters I ended up having only the play button on the
main menu.Is this normal or what am I doing wrong or nor doing…………Ken

It is not a play and "Fast Forward" it is a play and "Next Page"
You have created a video with more chapters than there are thumbnail on that particular chosen menu.
If you use the Preview Option and click that icon that you thought was a "Fast Forward" you will see the next page. That next page will have a
Play, Previous page (looks Like a rewind), a "Home Button" (Takes you back to the first menu). IF you still have more chapters than you can fit on this second page then you get yet another "Next Page" (Like a fast forward button) to take you to page 3.

Thanks for the explanation Steve but I dont think it applies to what I had.
The point of my post was to get a way to show only one main menu on DVD insertion with all chapters showing there too.Following advice here I was able to do that. With 4 thumbnails on this menu page there was one for the whole film and 3 other chapters. This was on a chosen template that could accommodate that amount,so I dont think what you are saying applies.......Hope I am on the same wavelength here, will wait to be
advised what I have said makes sense!

Your 4 thumbnails are all chapters.
The Play all button is the small oblong one that normally looks a bit like a forward arrow. If you have something that resembles a fast forward button then you have more chapters than there are available thumbnails.
