Captured DV in 16:9 ratio and saved as .avi. When in Edit, appeared in 4:3 ratio. Video elongated vertically. It wasn't a problem for the last 10 days. Using same camcorder, same tape.

Welcome to the forums David,

You say you captured 16:9, however is the video clip's ratio 16:9 or 4:3? In otherwords it was shot as 16:9 correct? If so check the Project Properties (File menu>Project Properties or just press [ALT]+[Enter] to open the project properties dialog. Go to the General Tab, and by Display Aspect Ratio is should read 16:9, it may not.

Also in the Preferences settings, (press F6 on your keyboard), on the General tab, you might check the box beside the option found in the Project section, Show message when inserting first video clip into the timeline. This way when you insert the first and only first clip into a project, VS will prompt you asking if you want the Project settings changed to match those of the video clip, if they are different.

Thanks Ron. This is very helpful. I also discovered that somehow the initial capture format was changed to 4:3 instead of the 16:9 I used to.

Not to worry ---- I went to a wedding about 2 months ago and one of my sons borrowed my camcorder to film it. Unbeknown to me someone turned on the "night shot plus" so when we later came to watch the video it was rather green with bright eyes!

Managed to salvage things by just mixing in a few seconds here and there with the slide show.
