Yes maybe it is time to have a separate web board, where no one is under Corel's almighty thumb. Reliant upon them for anything. They certainly have proved througout the years, they are totally unreliable.

For what it's worth, I've had such a forum for a couple of years now. Shortly after this was hacked, and brought down, I took it upon myself to put one up. A back-up forum in case such an attack would occur again. This has been kept as a backup, an not much else. My main concern was the monthly bandwidth if it were used on a regular basis. The expense is soley out of my pocket, which is very, very shallow. I know of no one else having volunteered to put that expense forward, no one. Currently I'm laid-off from work and have been for over a month. Still I keep this forum. However it may come to be, that I must consider reducing my expenditures, and it would certainly be one of the first to go. Over the last week, and certainly the last couple of days I've been thinking that why would anyone want to support Corel? In having even a separate web board, would this be supporting Corel? Corel apparently does not support their own web board, so why should I...

Edited:
I've removed my "dissertation" post as it seems that issue has been addressed and corrected.

Software such as ccleaner and spybot is free but the authors suggest a donation would not be inappropriate.. I for one feel that if I use the softwarel the authors deserve a donation and make one willingly. I mention this as I for one would also be willing to donate to a forum such as this that provides me and other novices such useful information.
Perhaps there are sufficient like minded Corel product users out there that would make an independent forum viable.

That said I am so ignorant of what would be involved that perhaps I am speaking out of turn.

I am member of Cyberlink forum too. Cyberlink seems to be better in terms of page loading and respond when mods take up serious issues with them as most users complain of dismal technical support of Cyberlink.

It is time that the seniors here knock some sense into Corel lest Corel users
may drift away to competitors.

Today Cyberlink is touted as the best video editing software and Corel standing in 2nd place. :(

Hello

Below is a quote I extracted from the FAQ's of CD Freaks Forum.

Other than being a member of the forum I have no other association. I thought it may give the seniors some indication how to gain some free webspace. If you look at the second part of the quote it may answer the question of videoman about finance and bandwidth and give food for thought to Black Lab.

May I respectively ask the senior to look at this site.
Who is responsible for this site?
CD Freaks was started in 1997 as a small website on a free webspace account. Currently the website runs on multipe servers and serves millions of visitors every month. It is clear that also the management of the website had to grow and changes have been made the past years.

The website is a publication that has been brought into the company RankOne Media Group B.V. This is a privately held company located in the Netherlands. The company has a management team consisting of Robin van Lieshout and Jan-Willem Aldershoff. RankOne Media Group B.V. has the task of ensuring the operation of the website by delivering the infra structure and manpower required to manage the community. In return the company receives the advertising fees.

A very important role is there for the volunteers that make CD Freaks as it is. News updates and maintenance of the software, media, devices and price watch sections is possible through a team of highly motivated volunteers that have proven to be very valuable to the site.

Besides this group of volunteers working on the product database, we also have a voluntary team of experienced reviewers. Many of them already working for us for many years and providing the most in-depth and extensive reviews on digital storage products currently available on the internet.

Does CD Freaks make money?

CD Freaks is part of a company and therefore aims to earn money. Money is earned through advertising and commission based sales. Advertising means that companies pay in order to strengthen their brand or for extra attention for their products. Commission based sales generate revenue whenever a visitor is referred by us to an online store, and makes a purchase.

We would like to stress that all information and reviews are unbiased and independent. Advertising does not influence editorial content and advertising sales and the editorial team is strictly separated.

The RankOne Media Group B.V. is committed to improve CD Freaks as much as possible and therefore invests large sums of its income in improvements of the website. This additional to the costs involved with the server space and bandwidth used by the site.
Kind Regards

Thank you for that information Aztec. It will be taken into consideration.

I received an email reply from one of Corel's staff. He advised that their I.T. has fixed the page load problem, and he will be following up on it. I hope this is true, and not just another pacifying "fix". Currently I can not accurately gauge this, as I'm in a motel. The Wi-Fi broadband is slow. I've tried other websites, and forums (including my own), and they still appear to load much faster.

When the functioning issues arise, these can be limited to a region, or seen everywhere. Sometimes region specific problems are not due to the server, but some problems on the internet route. For this reason, we always check with members/staff which are located in the various corners of this globe. When we all are experiencing the same, it's safe to say it is their server, which has been the case here over the past months.

I am sorry. I have been logged onto the Board since 5:45 this morning i.e. approx. 12.5 hours. This morning, for the first 6 hours, the Board was terrible, as has become normal. But after about 6 hours, it seemed to get better. I thought perhaps something had happened to improve things. Indeed it stayed that way for about 6 - 7 hours.

But I have just come back to it and read the above message from Ron. Sadly, it took 1 minute 32 seconds after I pressed the button to write a reply, before the page came up for me to write this. And then it asked me to log in again, when I had never logged out, and had been using the board, so that the usual 24 hours rule did not apply i.e. I should never have been logged out automatically. I logged in as requested, and it took about 23 seconds, and I got this composition box immediately, which is a little strange, since I thought after logging-in I would be required to go through the various pages again.

So things have not improved -- though I repeat this afternoon, things seemed fine and it was taking only 3 - 5 seconds to change a page (which was just about normal on my computer for previous operation of this Board, though slow nonetheless). And even on the pages processing the 100 or so new applicants (or in reality, the 98% of them who were known spammers), deleting each was taking only a second or two.

So I am afraid I cannot report any lasting improvement -- and I am led to think that the improved performance I noticed this afternoon may have been either a coincidence, or else was a fix that was less long-lasting than usual.

EDIT: And just to punish myself, I am coming back to say that it took an incredible 2 minutes 40 seconds to post the above!!!! Outrageously slow...

FURTHER EDIT: And an incredible 3 minutes 17 seconds to post the above Edit. I wrote a separate email and sent it while waiting!!!! I have far too many other things to be doing than wasting my time on this...

I read the 4 new posts in the VS forum, and the 1 in the moderators forum. Going to and from the first couple were very quick, and the last two very quick. In between it took an average of 1 minute and 18 seconds to go from page to page.....

EDIT: POSTING THIS MESSAGE TOOK AN ABSURD 5 MINUTES AND 44 SECONDS

I guess I should have added that the Moderators of this forum have been hounding Corel for months regarding the forum's performance. So, short of going to Canada and hitting them over the head with baseball bats (or hockey sticks), how can we "knock some sense into Corel"?

Hmmm... for the past several hours, my access to this Board has been quite fast, and consistently so, including on the Admin part of the Board. I have also just received an email from Corel in Taiwan saying they have added more memory to our server, and are monitoring it. It may be coincidental, but as I say, at the moment, it seems to be running quite normally... But believe me: I will be monitoring it too!!

I must say that things do seem to be running very smoothly. Strange that just 3 hours ago I browsing the forum and literally gave up because of the extreme slowness. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
