dvd burn problem

I am a supernoob at dvd creation, and I have searched the manual and these forums for an answer, but there is something about crating dvd's I just don't understand.
I'm using VS to edit the commercials out of movies I have Tivoed and converted to .mpg files. However, even though the length of the edited .mpg's is less than two hours, the total size remains greater than the dvd limit of 4.4 gb, because they were recorded at high quality.
Is there a way in the Share function of VS to reduce these files to a size that will fit on a dvd, or better yet, to convert them to vcd? Or do I just not get it at all?
VS 12 works great for what I mostly want to do, which is edit these movies and convert them to watch on my Pocket PC, but there are some that I would like to have on dvd/vcd so my wife can watch them on her dvd player on her treadmill.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Kirk
Once you have removed the commercials and completed the editing you should create a new video file.
Share--Create Video File
Changing the Bit Rate to a lower rate will reduce the file size.
As a guide:-
Using 8000kbps will allow 60 minutes per disc
6000 kbps will allow 90 minutes
and 4000 kbps 120 minutes.

So for a two hour video using 4000 should create a video file under 4.3 Gb, and fit to disc.

OK
Set the project properties (Alt+Enter) to the same as your Mpeg properties. with the exception of the Bit Rate, Set this to 4000kbps.
Share Create Video File Same as Project Properties
The resultant file will be under 4.3 Gb
In addition to the above the audio settings may reduce the file size. If you are using LPCM selecting Digital Dolby will also reduce the file size.

Use the new file to burn a disc from a new project.

Thanks, Trevor.
I KNEW there had to be a way; just couldn't figure it out.
