Capturing is choppy

When I capture my video its real choppy now it stutters. Any ideas as what this can be?

Are you talking about during the capture process, or the captured clip is choppy when you play it back in clip or project mode?

Also, what kind of clips are we talking about? Where did they come from? What are you capturing with?

We need more details!

Geez I didnt leave much info sorry.

Yes during the capture process its choppy, I'm using a Cannon GL-2 , firewire set up. So I let it play for a little while and then end the capture. I view it in edit phase and its still choppy.

When I play the video off the cam it flows perfect.

Capturing in the DV format. Using a 1394 Port on the PC side.

I was able to capture in windows movie maker and it captured without any skipping/choppiness.

Have you tried capturing in DV format using Windows Movie Maker? If that too is choppy, then that would suggest something is wrong on the physical side i.e. either your Firewire card or cable or (worse) the Firewire jack in your camera.

You can also download a small freeware program WinDV which specialises in just capturing DV (windv.mourek.cz)

Have you also tried changing the DV encoder -- I think it is set to Type 2 by default, though VS seems to be more comfortable with Type 1. You will find that under the Options icon on the Capture page.

I know this doesn't help your situation, but I am not happy with X2 capture either. Mine is not choppy, but it is not smooth either. Just makes the capturing process difficult. I also recently discovered that when I click on Capture it does not capture right away. There is a delay of a second or two which, again, makes capturing difficult. The difference in our situations is that although what I see when capturing is not smooth, the ultimate captured video is. It plays perfectly.

My solution is to capture with v10, which captures flawlessly, then import in to X2 for editing. You may think about the same thing using MovieMaker.

As I said in another thread, sometimes the headache and time involved finding why something doesn't work just isn't worth it when a good workaround is right there in front of you.

As I said, just use Movie Maker to capture, then import the files into X2 for editing. You could also use the aforementioned WinDV.

I capured in DV-AVI format in Movie Maker and dumped it into VS 11+ and the video is still choppy. I'm lost here I swapped out with 2 differnt firewires.

Do I need to load a codec or something?

Ok heres what I have done in the meantime.

I tried to capture from my Panasonic Camera with the same outcome.

I also uninstalled the ATI control catalyst control center. Same Outcome.

I also plugged my firewire into the back of my PC to try a differnt 1394 port. Same Outcome.

Capturing in Windows Movie maker and VS11+ are both choppy. Same Outcome.

Uninstalled
world of warcraft demo
smart sound quick racks plugin
intervideo device service

Same Outcome.

I'm thinking of the Radeon Driver its 8.561.0.0 maybe I need to rollback to another version?

My VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller driver is dated 7/1/2001 ver 5.1.1535.0

I will try and also capture to an external hard drive once im done this post.

This PC is about to find a spot out in the street soon.

Ok so I saved the video to my external and it didnt stutter I caught about 3 minutes of video. The stuttering would start 3 seconds of capturing.

What the hell is this about? The taxing of power? I have a 350 Watt Power supply in this thing. That was the cause of my last episode.

It sure seems like there's a hardware problem somewhere on your system. Your power supply is fine, same wattage as what's in my desktop PC. Most of the time Firewire is more forgiving than USB, when it comes to background apps disturbing it. Have you tried making sure you're not running any background processes/services that are not absolutely necessary? These can be shutdown using the Task Manager, however be sure you know what it is you're shutting down.
