paintshop pro X2 starting program hangup/crash
Ive 'purchased' and used several versions of psp for many many years. I am a huge supporter of paintshop pro.....but I dont know about this X2 version..I just bought it in Oct 08 and I am not happy at all. I'd love to give it back. I keep trying to use it but it seems to cause me different stresses. Im back to using version 9 again and it bothers me I purchased this new one and feel it was a waste. I dont have time to keep trying to make it work or figure it out. The older programs for me were easy to understand and learn to use.
Now what is happening with x2 is that on start up of the program, it hangs up and freezes when it says it is "updating cache .....something something. I cant even get it to work.

I'm not sure what OS you're running but have you cleared out the files in your TEMP folder recently? It stores temp files that programs use while they are active.
First you need to be able to see Hidden Files and Folders. In WinXP or Vista, from any Windows Explorer window, go to Tools menu, Folder Options>View. Scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders, tick the box beside Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Now the path to the TEMP folder is different for Vista and XP. For XP the path is C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserNameHere\Local Settings\Temp
For Vista: it is C:\Users\YourUserNameHere\AppData\Local\Temp.
Now you can delete the files in the Temp folder. Do not delete the Temp folder though.
Next if you can get PSP to fully launch, go to File>PreferencesReset Preferences. This opens a dialog called Reset the Application. It has a number of options available. Check the box beside Delete all cache files. (Active caches rebuilt on restart).

Thank you for the reply. Im pretty good at keeping the temp files down. there were only 38 in there so I deleted them.
I actually uninstalled the whole program and re-installed it, got your email after I uninstalled the program. It seems to be loading up but holy smokes it sure loads up quite a bit slower than psp9. Its opening atleast!
thanks again, appreciate it.

Try deleting both the PSPP X2 and PSPP XI database files using the instructions at http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightn ... qid=762173 or http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightn ... qid=762111.
Even if you don't have XI installed, you might have an old database lurking from a previous trial installation of either XI or Snapfire.

this is interesting, thank you. It is possible I did download a trial of psp back before I bought it. for the life of me I cant remember. I will run the info you sent. thank you.
I have a new question since checking this out if you dont mind....
Is it a mistake to have psp 9 still installed and I still use it, even with psp X2 installed and trying to get it going? Back when I bought psp 9, I kept 7 running as I was comfortable with it. when I got used to 9, and didnt need to run back to 7, I uninstalled it. This is the only program I never uninstall the previous version until I feel comfortable with the new version.
I just am sending this other question as I dont want to be causing myself and this board extra 'puzzles; to solve.

paint shop pro x2
I am having problems with Paint shop Prox2. I get error messages that are C++ visual library. I cannot open Paint Shop, Media One or Painter. It started out running fine then something happened and now nothing works. I have tried everything from re-installing to drivers, restore, adding RAM. Tech support wanted me to delete some .db files but I can't find them and now they say I will have to call for support and pay for it. I would just like to know if it is the program or my computer. If others are having this problem then I ASSUME it is the program. I started with PaintShopPro 7 when it was Jasc and have not had any problems until now. Can anyone help? I am on a fixed income so I can't afford to throw my money away (neither can anyone else), and I feel ripped off....

Welcome to the forums,
What operating system are you running, Vista, or XP? Sometimes MS updates don't just fix things, they break them. This may be why it was working and now doesn't. When you reinstalled PSP did you also reinstall any updates/patches? If not try doing so.
Another thing that prevents PSP, Painter, CorelDraw, and I think that MediaOne is included, is Corel's anit-piracy protection of Protexis Licensing. It must be installed, and must be running. If not, those programs will not launch. I've never seen the C++ error thrown because of it though.
Did you follow the links above posted by Tim? That should provide some insight as to the databases, and correcting them.
One reason we are here, is to provide help, so that people don't have to throw their money away on their ridiculous pay for support. Just hang in there, try the suggestions, and we should get you back running again.
You could also try restoring your system to a time before the programs stopped working. For instructions on doing a system are found HERE

paint shop pro x2
Thank you for your reply. I did follow the links and was able to eliminate the .db files that tech support suggested. I just couldn't get to them, but the instructions you gave was easier to follow. It didn't help, unfortunately. I had tried to restore before but this time I went back to March and did a restore. I re-installed Paint shop and I don't get the Runtime C++ now but the error window says that the install couldn't procede because it was possibly corrupt or illegally modified. I don't know which is worse...I installed 2 Gig of Ram for a total of 3Gig, and updated drivers for my video which is the ATI Radeon Xpress 200. The processor is AMD Athlon 64 and I am running Windows XP professional. This has me pretty worn down....I appreciate you taking the time to help.Could be my Alzheimers is kicking in.....

That corrupt or illegally modified message is what jumps up when Protexis detects something, like it's not running. Right-click on your My Computer icon, select Manage. Then click on the Plus beside Services and Applications to expand it. Next click on Services, and in the right pane, scroll down to Protexis Licensing. If it is not running, click on the Start the Service. You might also try stopping it and restarting it.

After I posted the last I reversed the restore, but when I read what to do, I went in to check about the Protex and it was started. I stopped and started it like you suggested, but I am back to the runtime error. I guess the only thing I can do is reformat and that always makes me apprehensive. I am mad at this program and Paint shop has always been so easy for me to use and I always upgrade. Now I am tired of it. I also have Video Studio12 and it runs fine. I think I will upgrade PhotoImpact. I don't know why I always kept both of these updated. I wish I had gotten on this form sooner....I appreciate your input.

After running PSP Photo X2 successfully for a while the program has ceased to open - it is shown as running in task manager but nothing actually happens. The same thing happens with MediaOne, though Painter Photo Essentials 4 is OK. I've tried repair twice, but I cannot do a fresh install because uninstall does not work either, even in safe mode. I've done several reboots.
It may point to a Protexis problem, but I have tried stopping and restarting that service without it making any difference. Does anyone have any more ideas please?

I've now solved my own problem - it was Norton 360, for which there is a fix. See http://corel.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/corel ... qid=763649 The problem seems to have been introduced with Norton 360 v3, which is an upgrade being rolled out free to subscribers, so will be affecting a lot of people.

Thank you for posting what was causing the problem. FWIW, I stopped using Symmantic (Norton) years ago. They and McAfee have a problems with false hits, along with breaking perfectly safe programs. Due to all the internet threats, it seems almost imperative to have separate machines for your personal programs, and for internet surfing. That way on your editing machines there is no need for all this bloated security stuff to mess up your programs...
