I have the main video, two overlaid titles and a 14 sec quicktrack loop on the timeline. each clip plays when clicked but when i play project in preview window the marker jumps to the end and does not play back the project (4 clips laid together). When i use an mpa file this does not happen.

This is not uncommon for Preview playback to be jumpy, not playback smoothly. It has to throw all your editing, all the overlays, sound, music, titles together on-the-fly. The more complex your project, the less smooth it becomes. If you're concerned about playback being smooth, I suggest you set your Playback mode in the Preferences dialog to High Quality. You will then need to wait for VS to render to temp files, before previewing. I do this from time to time. You can also set Preview Ranges, and VS will only render and playback those segments.
