Unable to access audio codec (AVI AC-3)
Moderator: Ken Berry
I am still having no luck. I actually reinstalled windows because of all the messing around i have done and when i installed a fresh copy of VSX2 Pro there wasn't even a divx option in AVI. Looking through the forum i found a topic about renaming the divx dll however when i looked for the divx file in my VS it was not there so i went to divx.com and downloaded Divx7 and now i have a divx option for avi however still no AC-3.

Ok, after everything that you've done, I opened up VS and had a look.. You're probably not going to like this...................................................
With DV type-1 , you can not access Dolby Digital. You can however render to RAW uncompressed AVI, DV Type-2, or many of the other, including DivX using the Multi-Channel 5.1. For setting the Project Properties, pressing the Edit button which opens the Project Options dialoge, on the Corel Video Studio Tab, you can change the audio channels from Stereo to Multi-Channel Surround Sound.
For rendering a video file, if selecting DVD NTSC (or PAL) does not produce Dolby in the Settings, use the Custom option then go to the Compression tab, and change the audio settings located at the bottom. However you must have DVD NSTC or PAL selected as the Media Type.
If you'll notice that when you change codecs on one tab, it will affect other settings. Dolby AC-3 which the only way that I can bring it up is to have DVD NTSC (or PAL) selected for the Compression. This is MPEG-2 of course. Then I have the option of selecting in the Audio section, Dolby Digital Audio, and then for the Audio Type, either 2/0 (L,R) which is the AC3, or 3/2(L,C,R,SL,SR) which is the 5.1. Apparently AC3 is only available using MPEG Compression, and moreover just when the NTSC or PAL DVD compression is selected. Selecting MPEG-2 the Dolby Digital audio is not available, only Stereo or Joint Stereo.

Ok then my ac-3 is fine it is just odd that it was showing up in AVI when I had the codec pack installed. I am trying to produce an avi file with ac-3 so that i am able to play it on my xbox360. The only multi channel sound it will support is ac-3 or wma. I tried to produce a WMV file with windows audio 10 and VSX2 crashed so i must have something set wrong. Further more should divx be included in VSX2 pro or does it have to be added as a codec. The only way I can get divx as an option is to install divx from divx.com.

VS Pro will install an old outdated version of DivX, hence the post you read about renaming that divX file. Then when you install the current DivX, VS Pro will see it and allow you to use it..
Either VS just does not allow using AC3 with "avi" files, and others may, or it may be something specific to Dolby. When you speak of avi, that covers well over 100 different possibilities. You may have read one of the many other posts, where we have stated that avi is a container, not a specific file format. So you could have a MOV, WMV, DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4, and many others wrapped inside the avi container. Some of them may allow using AC3 audio while others may not. What specific file format does your Xbox 360 accept? Remember "avi" does not describe it, unless talking about the raw, uncompressed flavor..
Ok I looked up the Xbox360 and here's the allowable video file formats:

So you need to render your video file to one of those. One such format is using the MPEG-4. VS does provide this option. Select Share>Create Video File. In the menu select MPEG-4>Zune H.264. The audio is compressed using the MPEG-AAC audio codec.Video Formats File extension
MPEG-4 media created with either the MP4pt2 video codec or the H.264 video codec and the AAC-LC audio codec .m4v and .mp4
QuickTime movie created with either the MP4pt2 video codec or the H.264 video codec and the AAC-LC audio codec .mov
Windows Media Center DVR (Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate only) .dvr-ms
Windows Media Video .wmv

Ok once again I know you suggested not doing so however I reinstalled K-lite, both xvid and ac-3 shows up however it will not let me select anything over stereo or it will just give me an error again that the codec is missing i am doing some checking on k-lite's forum right now to see if they have an answer.
It would be good if you could point us in the right direction on how to configure the codec in VS instead of saying don't install codec packs. Some people here are doing rather advanced things outside of Corel and need codec packs to help with existing media.
The product should not be fragile and should be configurable to techncial users.
If you can show us where we manage how VS deals with audio codecs that would be most helpful. The commonly asked questions is not turning any answers up for me.

You don't need "codec packs", but a particular codec in that pack. Installing the entire pack is what can sometimes cause problems. It is advisable to only install the codecs you actually need. Some people here are doing rather advanced things outside of Corel and need codec packs to help with existing media.
WARNING! Codec Packs

That wouldn't be so bad if Codecs weren't voodoo that is over the head of even techies.
They are so complicated that I can't even makes heads of tales of it.
For example, I get no audio in VS12 but have no clue why.
Even on the board the remedy is "dont install codec packs"
If they were simpler to understand, I would be able to manage the codecs to i could fix the problem.
Pure voodoo.

You appear to have hijacked an existing thread and the only clue to the problem you have is the line:
For starters I would check that you are getting sound into your computer from your video. We have no idea what that video is, where it originated from or how it got into your computer.
You could start with this link:
No sound
If the answer is not there then you need to start a new topic and complete the details requested Here. also...
