External hard drive "looses" video file links in V

Post by lambert76 »

I have a terrabite esata external hard drive on which i keep all of my video editing files. I edit with VS11.5 and am relatively new. A few times when i unplug my external drive from my laptop after editing some video and plug it in the next day to the same laptop, same port, ect (i have to unplug every day to transport) the video files links are lost. Sometimes they are not lost? Is this an inherant problem? I searched the forum with external hard drive and relink.
I always appreciate the great help from this forum...

I also use an external drive for my clips and I have never had a re-link problem, unless I move the clips to another folder. Could it be that when you re-connect the external drive it is being assigned another drive letter than it had the time before? That would make VS think the clips had been moved.

I do have a 32gb pen drive. It is assigned "e" now and the external hd is "f". If you hooked these up in revese plug in order or deleted the pen drive i bet it does change the drive letter of the external to "e". Great help Black Lab! Again i will monitor.

What you need to do is set the drive letter yourself rather than allowing the machine to do it. Give it a fairly high drive letter such as from "M" upwards.
You will also have to repeat this process on any other computers that you hook the external drive to otherwise on lets say your laptop it has drive letter M but on your desktop drive letter E.
Using the same drive letter on all your machines is simply good housekeeping - especially if one program or link looks specifically at a certain location for a certain file.

To assign a drive letter is very easy and the method is the same in XP and Vista.

1. On your Desktop right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage"
2. Refer to the following screen shot and then follow the prompts.

Drive Letter Link

This is great info and such a potential frustration Corel should add in their manual a hint that drive letter management may be needed to avoid "de linking". Thanks again.

I had read posts before where people have had this problem
and others, so when I got my External drive I just use it as storage
only and don't have any problems with it.
