Video Studio 10 video capture problem

I tried to capture video from a camera that I have routinly used in the past and received the following message: "No video cature driver is installed or no device attached". This message came up when clicking on the capture icon in VS 10. When plugging the camera in or turning it on I do not get a Windows fly-up indicating options for actions to perform.

I deleted old video files from My Documents "Ulead" and "Video" folders this morning before attempting the download. I also shut down and rebooted the computer after experiencing this problem and that made no difference. The reboot went into windows safe mode which cause me to reboot and succesfully enter into Window XP SP3.

When you camera is connected and turned on does it show as a connected device in My Computer?

If not, maybe your cable or firewire card is bad (I'm assuming it is connected via firewire).

It would be useful to know exactly (by name and model) the type of equipment (camera, capture device, cable) you are using, and what format you want to capture in.

I am using a firewire connection. When attached to the computer it does not show as connected in My Computer. The camera is a Panasonic Mini-DV Model PV-DV400. The capture device is an Intel Integrated Mother Board which I do not know the model number of (never had a problem before). The capture format is AVI. The computer is a Gateway with 3ghz Intel Pentium processor, 1.5 Gig memory, and about 85 Gig remaining hard drive memory.

If it is not showing as being connected in My Computer, than I would start looking at possibly a problem with your firewire cable. Have you tried replacing it? They are not expensive these days.

With your camcorder turned off, unplug the firewire cable from your PC, then shutdown your PC. Leave it off for a minute, then plug the cable back in, and bootup your PC. When it is booted up, turn on your camcorder to the playback mode. Windows should make a sound and a prompt should pop up acknowledging that a new device has been connected and do you want to use it. If not there is a hardware problem, which includes, cable, firewire port on your PC or even on your camcorder...

Until you get your PC to see the device, no software is going to be able to use it...

The other thing you could do to test your connection is to open Windows Movie Maker, which also uses firewire. If you also have a problem with that, then it is clearly not just limited to Video Studio, and most likely to be a hardware problem as described above. An alternative to WMM would be the small freeware program a number of us here use for DV capture, namely WinDV which is available from windv.mourek.cz

I tied shutting the computer down, starting up, reattaching cable, and starting device. No beep and popup showing device recognized. Windows Movie maker did not recognize. I tried this with both of the firewire ports on the front of the computer with no success. I hooked my digital camera up to the computer via USB and that was recognized.

I then went to my laptop, inserted the firewire card, attached the cable, and when I turned the video camera on it was recognized. I was able to record to Windows Movie Maker on the labtop where I could not to the desktop.

Well, therefore it seems pretty clear that, if you were using the same cable for the laptop, then the firewire insert on your motherboard is kaput. The only thing I can think of would be to buy a new, separate Firewire card. They are cheap and easy to insert in any available slot on the motherboard.

Do you have another firewire device attached to the computer?
I have had no problems connecting my camcorder to the computer with a firewire UNTIL TODAY

So what happened TODAY?
Easy - I bought an external firewire hard drive which occupied a different firewire port than the one being used by my camcorder. Disconnect the firewire hard drive and..... the camcorder works again

OK!!. Go figure. I unpluged my firewire connected 320 gig WD external hard drive. I shut the computer down, rebooted, then connected the external hard drive via USB cable. Then I attached my video camera to one of the computers firewire ports. Amazing. Window now recognized the video camera and I am off to the races. Explain that one.
