A friend created a dvd of our recent dance concert and i've tried to import it so I can edit it further but it gets to about 80% or so and gives this message

Failed to read DVD information
Report ID: 0x80040901 (2305)

I tried loading it onto nero and it loaded.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Try copying the DVD to your Hard drive, then try importing from your hard drive using the Import DVD Folders..

I tried that but it did the same thing.

With VS 11 + I had a similar problem, the fix was a reinstall, but first go to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems and rename or delete the DVD folder. Then reinstall the program. It will recreate that folder and all it's contents. After that you should be able to import DVD folders, or from a DVD.

There's something in that DVD folder that gets corrupted. I haven't managed to find what particular file it may be though.

The above was taken from a previous post of mine, and the folder location pertains to WinXP. The path to the folder is the same in Vista. This is where Ulead programs placed files that are used by multiple versions and programs.

If it gets to 80% before falling over then I do not think it is the software.
It might possibly be a problem with the VOB files on the DVD.
Try to copy the entire DVD onto a hard drive directory and then rename the extension from VOB to MPG and insert them into your time line as if they were normal MPG files.

Sorry, but i'm not sure how to change the extension from VOB to MPG. I tried to just rename it but in the properties it still has the VOB extension.
I haven't tried the reinstall yet.

Since you're using WinXP, just open the VIDEO_TS folder in windows explorer, right-click on one of the VOB files and select Rename. When you rename it, you can keep the name to the left of the "." (dot) the same, just change the extension (the right of the dot) to mpg or mpeg. So the file name before renaming is VTS_01.VOB, after renaming: VTS_01.mpg

I'm using Vista. I did what you said but that doesn't change what type of file it is. When you go into properties it still says file type DVD Movie (.VOB). Once I had changed the file names I tried to import the files again and it came up with the same error code but didn't get anywhere near the 80% mark.

Just a thought here, but when you look at files in Explorer, do you see the extension? The default setting is to hide extensions - you need to toggle that off.

If extensions are hidden, you could be working with a file, for example, named FILE.TXT, but what you see listed is FILE. If you have extensions hidden, when you rename it to FILE.DOC, it will change the name of the file to FILE.DOC but leave the original extension, thus yielding FILE.DOC.TXT. Which is why, even after renaming, your files are showing up as still being VOB files.
