I understand how to do transitions between clips. I'm trying to have an ending clip fade to black and have a title fade in. I can make a title fade in from black but I'm not sure how to make a flip fade to black without having another clip to transition to.

Unless your clip is in an overlay track that has it's own Fade-in/Fade-out, you have to use a color clip (black), with a fade-out transition.

However there is a sneaky way around this...Use the Pan/Zoom filter. It has a transparency option that could be used as a Fade-In and Fade-Out.

• Drag the pan/zoom filter to your clip.
• Click on the Customize button.
• On the first Keyframe, set the Zoom to 100%, and click on the center box to anchor it to the center of the frame.
• Right-click on the First Keyframe and select Copy/Paste to all.
• Go to the end of your clip, then move the playhead back about 1-2 secs.
• Right-click on the Filter's timeline, and select Insert to insert a keyframe. Don't change anything here.
• Go to the last keyframe, and then move the Transparency slider all the way to 100%.

Now you will have a fade-out at the end without having to use any color clips or transitions...

Great idea. I never thought of that. One thing though, using 11 +
I'm not sure about cut & past, but if you move the slider to where you want it to start to fade & click on the + symbol another point is created. You can set this to 0 transparency. Actually you can create several points & set transparency or zoom to what ever you want.
I just discovered this myself.

Yes everything I described above can be done in VS11+, and even 10+...

You shouldn't have to make one black, as there is already one included in the Color Library. To access the Color Library, click on the down-arrow beside what is the Default Library showing--Video. Then you should see it in the menu choices. There are several colors provided. Just select the black one, drag and drop it in the timeline.
