Canon HV20 Not recognized

I am having a little issue. When I connect my HV20 by firewire it is not recognized at all unless I go into the camcorder menu and Lock the output as DV. I can not upload HD content in this manner. It is scaled down to normal DV. Any explanation why this occurs?

Also, since I dont have a Blue Ray burner does it really matter whether I am uploading the HD or just normal DV? Obviously VideoStudio I guess will have to scale down the edited footage to be burnt to DVD when I am finished. Is there any quality difference between letting VideoStudio scale it down or just uploading it from the camera as regular DV?

Thanks ALL!

I am using the latest version of VideoStudio 12 by the way.

I happen to have a HV20 too and have no problem capturing HDV from it using VS11.5+ and VS12 via Firewire (as well as downconverting to DV format). So I am not sure what might be wrong with your setup. Can we assume you have set the camera to output in HDV rather than do the down-conversion to DV in the camera itself?

That being said, because VS will not split HDV by scene during capture, I tend to use a small freeware program called HDVSplit to capture my HDV. Then I simply open the captured (and split) files in VS for editing.

As for downconversion for standard def DVDs, I think that capturing in HDV and editing in that format, then downconverting after editing is finished, will produce a slightly better quality DVD that downconverting from the start. It is not significantly better quality, but certainly noticeable to the human eye ... well, at least to mine!!

Hmmm
Maybe it is a Windows issue? When I set the camera to output in HDV the camera is not even recognized by windows. Another words when I plug it in I dont get any windows sounds indicating something was just plugged in. When I change the setting to down convert, then it finds the Canon DV camera no problem. There isn't any extra drivers I need to install first is there? Strange....

If you're in the capture part of the program it takes a minute or so for it to load up so it knows it's in HD mode. How long have you waited? The HV20 appears ok but I can't access a file to put the hdv video into for quite a while. Not sure I ever hear something when plugging into my computer (XP pro sp3). What's your operating system?
