Video filters to clean up VHS DV capture

Hi,

I have used Canopus ADVC-110 to capture analog VHS files into DV files.
Now I would like to process these files into MPEG-2 files using VS X2 pro.
The tapes are now 720*576 4:3 PAL 25Hz DV type-2 files.

I would like to do following:
1) Crop edges, so the wavy/noisy edges would not be seen
2) Apply somekind of de-noise filtering to smooth out the crominance-noise(?)
3) perhaps de-interlace the movie as well to make it more usable for computer based viewing

The part 1) seems to be quite easy with cropping filter. If I set parameters as:
width 93%, height 96%, stationary yes, no fill color
(it would be nice to be able to set cropping center numerically)
This seems to get rid of the edge artifacts and scale picture to full size (720*576).

The part 2) noise filtering seem to be quite hard. I could not find any spacio-temporal filters to get rid of VHS noise. There seems to be plenty of those in Virtualdub and its sister programs.
So far, it looks like de-snow works best. Any hints/tips about better filter???

Then the part 3) de-interlacing... should this be done or not? The old interlaced tv-screens are gone. These films would be viewed on computer screens or on HDTV LCD displays. So material could be de-interlaced.

Can this be performed with video filters???

Also, when I have good set of filters in place, how do I apply them to ALL clips on timeline????

Thanks in advance for all the tips that you oldtimers can share with a novise.

It's a matter of trial and error, finding the filter that works best for you. So if using another filter works better than the DeNoise, Deblock or whatever VS has, by all means use it.

I have to agree that the Crop Filter could use some sort of anchoring, just like the Pan/Zoom, where you can anchor it to the center.

De-interlacing is just a matter of choosing Frame Based when you are ready to create your video file. This is done in the Share Step, Create Video File. You select the Custom option and press the Options button in the Save As dialog. I think it is found on the 2nd tab, where the Field Order can be changed.

You can also set your Project Properties [ALT] + [Enter], so that it has Frame Based, instead of UFF or LFF (Upper Field First or Lower Field First).

Sorry but interlaced TV is not gone in my house. In fact there's only 1 of my family members that do not still have the "old" CRT TVs...;)
