Formatting and Problems with MPEG

I am using VS 11 Plus. Project is footage from both HD and SD cameras. Let me preface the question with this. I'm not sure I understand the different formats of mpeg. I converted it to mpeg using the mpeg optimizer and it opens no problem in windows media. Saved it to disc, gave it to a friend, opens find off the disc and he saved it to his drive, had issues with choppiness. Now when i try to upload to youtube it just hangs eventually. DO i need to convert it to something else? Can anyone give me some basic understanding of the mpeg optimizer and all that on VS? Clearly I'm somewht of a novice when it comes to all the jargon. Thanks in advance.

When you
saved it to a disc did you create a Video DVD, by opening the burn module (Share>Create Disc) and then optionally build menus, create chapters, before finally burning it to a disc? Or did you just create a video file (Share>Create Video File) and then just burn that to a disc (CD or DVD ? ) like backing up text files and pictures?
Doing the latter, will allow for the video file to be opened on a PC by any number of video players. However will not allow for the video to be viewed on TVs by way of a DVD Player..
Next the MPEG file that you create must meet DVD specs, namely be MPEG-2, with certain frame sizes, and there are limits on the bitrate. Unless you just "backed up" ie; saved your video files to a disc, it would be impossible to use both HD and SD video on the same disc. You would need to either downscale the HD to SD or upscale the SD to HD.
Editing and producing DVDs is not real difficult, however not as easy as putting pictures on a disc for safe keeping. I'm going to point you to Steve's article he started some time ago, that has a wealth of information. You might want to read through
From Camcorder to DVD article written by Steve (Site Admin). It has a wealth of information.

The MPEG Optimizer is a new feature in VS Pro X2. It basically shows you the best or better compression for MPEG, and what will and will not be recoded..

I went to tools and burned a dvd directly. didn't bother with menus. both HD and SD seem fine on my tv on the DVD except the ration obviously changes. the real movie is for the net so this won't matter to me as much since i'm not concerned with extremely high quality here for you tube. so If i do want to convert it to an mpeg, how do i got about changing specs? And what specs would you recommend? i haven't had time to read that article you linked, but i will later tonight. Thanks so much for your help so far.
