Inserting MPEG files

I have recently bought a new TV card, a Hauppauge WinTV Nova-S Plus. The video files it records from satellite TV are in "DVD MPEG 2048 bytes" format, which Hauppauge calls native MPEG format.
When I try to insert these into Videostudio (X2 or 11) to edit them, Videostudio takes ages to insert them and then, when it has, if I view the file properties from in VS, it says the bitrate is 0 kbps, which, of course, can't be the case.
If I try to edit the video, say to set the start point to the beginning of the recorded programme, and cut off any overrun at the end, it works, but then when I output to video or create a DVD, it reencodes the entire file, when the format is already supposed to be DVD compatible.
Can anyone suggest any way around this?
Thanks,
Gary
