How do I create a title?

I'd really appreciate your help with this. I would like to start my video with an introduction title and finish up with the title for flying credits. However, I do not want the title to overlay with the video clip. I want a title by itself --> transition effect --> video clip, etc. I've been looking for several posibilities but couldn't find the answer. Please help
