audio overdub possible?

Post by bgamd »

Using VS Pro X2. Windows XP

After a bit of fiddling, I am able to record onto the narration track.
I have a music video of my band. The vocals are very light and I would like to add another vocal track on top of the existing audio track.

To receive cues and be in time with the music, I need to hear the original track music while I record the additional vocal onto the narration track. Is this possible? So far, when I "record" onto the microphone track, the original video/audio track is muted. I tried splitting the audio from the video with no change.
I have a duplex sound card and I am able to hear my microphone input as it is recording but no sound from the avi file while recording in VS.

Any help will be appreciated.

I wouldn't use VS for that I would use Audacity (free).

Though, in theory you could...if your vocal is a seperate track and overlay it over the music track. But I reckon do it in Audacity and export it as a single file after you are happy balancing the sound levels

Thank you for your attempt to help.

Yes, I could use an audio editor to make the overdub but that method would not allow me to view the video during recording , which is necessary to sync the voice to the video track, which also includes the music that I am singing to!

I find it hard to believe that you can not see and hear the original track while recording to the narration track in VS Pro X2. It is very helpful to have audio cues, as well as video, when recording narration.

It shouldn't be that hard to believe. VS is a consumer grade application. It is designed very simplistic. High-end, professional applications would be capable of this, at a high-end cost...;)

Why not? Simply minimize the audio editor and press play in VS...

Yep..you could minimise Audacity and press play in VS

You could also Create a video file and play the video in another application if your PC is a bit choppy playing VS and recording

Or (and I appreciate it's not possible in all cases) record the narration first then cut/edit to the narration.
