Upgraded to win xp from win 98se and installed a Sound Blaster (24bit )Audigy, as the previous one was not compatible with win xp
Tried to play a dvd created previously with win 98se, the 'Ulead player' screen appears and then a black screen and nothing more. I did click the dialogue box that appeared to play using Ulead, intially.
Could this be a compatible problem. Any suggestions please.
Thank you :?

Tell us more, Ladislaus. Does the DVD play in a standard DVD player? Can you play other DVDs on your upgraded computer? Do you have any other DVD player software installed on your computer? Does the DVD play through that software?

The fact that the DVD was made with Win98 shouldn't be a problem. The DVD standards haven't changed... If the DVD was standards-compliant before, it's still compliant now! (I'm assuming this is a "regular" video DVD with VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders?)

My first thought is that the DVD might be scratched or damaged. Or, there's something else wrong with the DVD... It may have been a flakey/defective blank, or a bad burn. (Some players are more tolerant than others, so you might not be aware of a problem.)

Try dragging the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your hard drive. If that fails, you've got a problem with the DVD or your computer's DVD drive.

If the folder does copy OK, try playing from the copy on your hard drive. And if that works, you can try burning from the hard drive to a new DVD. (Copy and burn the empty AUDIO_TS folder too.)

You can also test the DVD (and your drive) with Nero CD-DVD Speed (FREE!!!).

Just to clarify, Ladislaus, DVDoug's suggestions (try dragging the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your hard drive ...) are ones to try after you've gone through the standard troubleshooting steps I listed:

- Does the DVD play in a standard DVD player?
- Can you play other DVDs on your upgraded computer?
- Do you have any other DVD player software installed on your computer? If so, does the DVD play through that software? If not, you can try DVDoug's suggestion of downloading and testing your DVD and drive with Nero CD-DVD Speed.

Please let's know how you go.

Thanks Velojet and DVDDoug,
The DVD does play on the Panasonic player
I have no other DVD programmes installed.
Since there was also no sound I went to Creative.com web site and found out that the sound card had not been configured as expected. I followed their easy- to- follow steps. I then played the DVD and Presto! it worked- though there is a slight mismatch between the speech and the picture. As a computer dummy I am not sure that did the trick.
I will now try Nero CD-DVD to check and post the results
Thanks again for the invaluable advice.
