I'm confused. First you say:
when I click on custom it takes me to that same screen but mine says 4:3 which is what it should say. I then did not change a thing accepted what was there and then when it rendered it, it rendered in 4:3. When I don't go through custom it renders it in 16:9.
Then you say:
going through custom for me is not a guarantee that it will not produce the 16:9 format.
So which is it?

It appears that you're inadvertently selecting the NTSC DVD 16:9 template.

When you go to Share>Create Video File, if you choose something other than Custom then you are choosing a burning template.

Hi Doug

Wow it was Dec 2008 when you last posted on this subject. Merry Xmas.

I have just viewed the images. There¡¦s a lot of confusion going on here.
The image with the black bars looks like a 16:9 sat in a 4:3 frame.

I do not use X2 and am unsure how it reacts to some operations, I know it should be the same as the earlier versions.
I don¡¦t take that for granted.

Ok things to look for.

First.
Video Studio defaults its project settings to 4:3 aspect ratio. If you work with widescreen you can change the default to 16:9 from the Start Screen.
I am not sure if X2 uses the same default, or if it uses 16:9 by default. Which could be confusing.
As you appear to be working with 4:3, please inspect the start Screen and de-select 16:9. ( I think X2 may be set to 16:9)
If you do not see the start screen, go to File Preferences¡XShow Start Screen-Restart VS.

Next
VS changes the Project Properties when we insert the FIRST video clip to the timeline.
I know that VS 10 does this, but does X2. (irrespective of the next sentence.)
You can see this happen if you File- Preferences-Tick ¡V Show messages when inserting First.....
A window will appear prompting you to change the project properties, select YES/OK.
Your project properties will match the video files.

Next
Assuming your captured video files are Mpeg type. When you have completed the editing you should make a video file.
Share-Create Video File-Same As First Video Clip.
This will make a new file of your project using the videos properties.

Next
Your original captured video files.
Start a new project
Insert one of the original captured video files into the timeline.
You should see an info window, Select Details.
Using your mouse select the details in the right hand panel.
Use Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste to the forum.

When you use VS 10 or X2 you must make sure that the project properties match these settings.
X2¡¦s project properties will then be the same as the video file.
When you Share Create Video File you can use Same as project or Same as first Clip, as they should be the same.
