Aspect ratio discrepancy

I am using VS Pro X2 with Windows Vista

My source files are Sony ¡§mt2s¡¨ files.

File Type: AVCHD 1080i Format
Image Size: 1440 x 1080
Video Codec: AVC
Aspect Ratio: 16 : 9

I¡¦ve been going through my project settings and here is the part that doesn¡¦t make sense

The file¡¦s aspect ratio is listed as 16:9, but the image size of 1440 x 1080; which would appear to be a 4:3 ratio.

For instance:

At 16:9 a width of 1440 would have a height of 810
At 4:3 a width of 1440 has a height of 1080

Hence my confusion, which is it 16:9 or 4:3?

What am I missing in my understanding of Aspect Ratio and size?

What settings do I start with and end with to get the right sizing to fit the frame to video.

Ultimately my goal is to convert them to FLV files with as little ¡§Border¡¨ as possible. Even when using a custom size of 720 x 405 the file not only gets ¡§letterboxed¡¨ on the top and bottom, but on the sides as well.

If anyone has any thoughts on this, let me know

Video pixels are not always square! So, the pixel ratio can be different from the aspect ratio.

For example, standard and widescreen DVDs both have the same resolution (720x480 for NTSC, 720x576 for PAL). The widescreen version doesn't have more pixels, it has wider pixels.

ok, that makes sense.

So when converting to an FLV file, with the goal of matching the video size to the wide screen frame size...

My first question would be do i use NON-square pixel rendering?
