Blue Screen Error

I had been using Video Studio 11.5 Plus with my Win XP Media computer. I replaced that computer and purchased a new HP Pavillion with Vista. It has a dedicated NVIDIA 8500 video card, 640gig hard drive, 4 mg of ram. I purchased the new Video Studio X2 upgrade and I am having crashing problems, blue screen errors, and minidump errors. I reformated my new hard drive yesterday thinking that this problem might be related to a recently acquired virus, but I am still having the same problem. It always happens when I am working in Video Studio X2. I need some advice please. Is there a patch or upgrade that I should be getting? I have looked on the website for one and I do not see any patches available, but I sure need help. Oh, and I just remembered that I also have installed Corel Photo Impact. I was thinking that maybe there is a conflict between Photo Impact and Video Studio X2. I went ahead and uninstalled the Photo Impact to see if that would help. I sure would appreciate some assistance. Is this a Vista Problem? I am really puzzled. Thanks.

It's always puzzling...but I can assure you, for me at least VSx2 works heaps better in Vista than VS11.5+ did.

I also have Photo impact installed...

In Vista...check the Event Viewer which will give clues to what's causing the problems.

If BSOD is only happening with VS then there is a chance we can nail the problem down.

You mentioned a Virus but re-formating your HD should sort that problem out.

There are no Patches as yet for VSx2....

I am not familiar with the Event View in Vista, but I will do a search to find out more about it and see what it reveals; thanks for that tip. As for the reformatting issue: I called HP when I first had this problem and They suggested the possibility of the virus so we formatted the drive in case that was the problem. As I said, it didn't help because the next day I had the same "dump" error with blue screen. I did remove Corel's Photo Impact to see if there was a conflict causing this problem and so far I have not had any further blue screen errors, so maybe that was the problem. I'll keep you posted on that, but in the mean time I'll do more research with this event viewer and get back to you. Thanks.

There is one in XP too.... Basically Event Viewer records an entry when ever the OS crashes, stalls, or has a problem.

Next time you log in you can check what happen when the PC crashed.... you can then google the sometimes cryptic clues in Event Viewer for an easy to understand explaination...

So, you can start your PC, cause a crash then go back into Event Viewer.

Check Device Manager and go through all the ctagories to find any conflicts with hardware...

I found the Event Viewer and I am finding application errors with vstudio.exe, faultying module HerDocdll.dll, version 1.0.01 -AND- KERNEL
32.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000. There is other numbers but I think this is what you will need to guide me further. Let me know if you need more. Also, I reinstalled the Corel Photo Impact 12 that I had removed earlier. Any thoughts on whether these two programs are having conflicts that might be causing these blue screen, dump, and application errors? I am not familiar with .dll errors; I don't know what causes them or whether it means files are missing or corrupt or what. Thanks for your help.

I did a google serach on herdocdll.dll and I must say there are a few (but not many) other examples of people having similar problems with this dll file... It's a reletively unkown problem and not much information on this fi\dll file on the net

I'm afraid I'm at a loss to offer any decent advice but it seems to me an installation problem.

In Vista try installing VS by right clicking the setup file and Run as Administrator.

If from CD make sure discs are clean and there are no scratches.

If installed from DL'd file...re download and try again

If you do re-install X2, or do a repair install from the CD's, you might try disconnecting your pc from the net and disabling the anti-virus and firewall programs. They've had to become so aggressive these days that they can often interfere with a program install.

Be sure to turn them back on before connecting back to the net!

Since you've just experienced a virus infection, be extra vigilant when connecting any USB sticks, external hard drives and flash memory etc. Although your AV program should by default be set to scan such devices when they're connected, I would manually run a full scan on them for peace of mind.

HP pc's have a good restore function that an be used to reset the pc to "as bought condtion", which would be less of a "nuclear option" than reformatting the drive.

You might make use of Windows System Restore to make fresh restore points with each new program you install. That can be helpful in resolving some conflicts/problems since you can easily revert to a known working configuration.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions, but there was nothing connected when I re-installed X2 after the formatting and the virus protection hadn't been reinstalled yet either. There must be something wrong with the software. I too googled both of my .dll errors and I also see other Ulead customers having the same problem, but I didn't see any solutions. Do I call tech support or does someone out there have a solution for me. Now I am getting errors saying that Video Studio has to close. I just can't work for very long without something shutting me down.

Thank you for the suggestions, but after I formatted the drive nothing was attached to the computer when I re-installed X2 and the virus protection hadn't been re-installed yet either. So the installation was clean. I also Googled both .dll errors and I saw other Ulead customers having the same problem so there must be something going on with the software. I am now getting errors that are saying that the application has to close; I can't use the program very long without something shutting me down. What do I do? Do I call tech support? Anyone else out there have some suggestions? I sure appreciate your help.

You mention 4MB of RAM - I think (hope) you mean 4GB of RAM.
Have you tried my Troubleshooting Suggestions

Failing that - with 4 GB of memory available, you can try using a "Virtual Computer" and install a copy of XP giving it perhaps 2GB of RAM (How to Create Virtual Computer.)
Having created a virtual machine you can then tweak that Virtual computer with the procedure for creating a "Video Editing Profile" (Instructions here)

Regarding your concerns about VideoStudio conflicting with PhotoImpact - see my signature block!

Sounds more like a faulty install to me.

If you downloaded the upgrade, try downloading it again.

You might reconsider running chkdsk - it takes a while, but it might save you time in the long run.

I only find one other reference from Google, which leads to a subscription site, to be avoided! Including your post, there are 12 threads referencing Herdocdll.dll. None of them have a tidy happy ending, but when people fix things, they often don't post back. It seems like a problem (not necessarily with the program but with some as yet indeterminate combination of circumstances) that dates back to VS10, which I believe is when Intervideo took over Ulead. The dll is an Intervideo file.

The install is not a download; I purchased the disk and loaded it. And, the the original install has been uninstalled and reinstalled with the same results. Then the computer was reformatted and reinstalled with the same results. I will try the Virtual Computer suggestion you made, but I haven't done that before so I'll have to work on that. My main concern here is to establish if this is a computer problem, a Vista problem, or a software problem. I can take the computer back and get a new one, when they come back in stock, I can talk to Corel about the software fix and/or the Vista compatibility problem; I just don't know which one to focus on. Any thoughts? This is getting pretty frustrating. I must say that the problem do seem to change, but the don't go away.

Yes, I have 4 gigs of Ram not 4mb. Sorry, that was a typo.

Could be a faulty disc. Try looking at the surface of the disc for flaws.
If non are apparent, then copy the entire disc to a hard drive folder and then try and install from the hard drive. If the disc is faulty you will most likely not be able to copy the disc. If it does copy, there still could be a fault with either the disc or the laser of your DVD player.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. Let me give that a try. Thanks. I'll get back to you.
