ffdshow codecs play AVCHD files?

I was told that if I installed ffdshow, I could play AVCHD files in Windows Media Player. However, after installing ffdshow, Windows Media Player crashes every time. Did I hear wrong or am I doing something wrong. I am trying to find a decent way to check AVCHD files I am trying to create in VideoStudio 11.5 and X2 (trial). Neither program seems to be doing a very good job. In fact, I have yet to find a suitable program. I've even tried Vegas Studio Premium Pro, but it has serious glitches right now.

I don't know anything about ffdshow so cannot comment on that part of your question. I saw someone posted that about WMP a few days ago, and was surprised to hear it. But as I say, I don't know enough about ffdshow to comment one way or the other. I know that in the past I have installed ffdshow and it caused (or appeared to cause) conflicts with other programs on my computer, so I uninstalled it.

That being said, I have no need to use WMP for my AVCHD as I have both PowerDVD8 and WinDVD9, both of which are rated to play AVCHD, and do so, both well and smoothly.

That brings me to my next point. You don't tell us what your computer system is. But you need at least a Core 2 Duo or Quad to be able to play AVCHD smoothly. You can edit AVCHD on a Pentium 4 with 3.0 GHz processor with hyperthreading, using SmartProxy. But I have found that the edited video will not play smoothly on such a computer, so you have no idea if the editing was successfully unless you play it on a computer capable of playing it, or else play it on an external Blu-Ray rated player (I use the Sony PlayStation 3 which is networked to my computer.)

That being said, there is a bug in X2 which, even on powerful computers, results in a brief but very annoying blip associated with added transitions. You can read all about it, at great length, at http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 465#167014

I don't know if it was me who gave you that info (I have posted something of the sort somewhere) but I can playback .mpg AVCHD files rendered on VS11.5+ using WMP. The ffdshow icon appears indicating it is doing the decoding.
