Evening all. I have a problem joining two video files together in the timeline. I have a video project that I've edited and it is saved as a VSP. This opens up fine in the timeline on its own.
I have another project, also a VSP, and that also opens up fine in the timeline. Again, on its own.
These are two parts of the same video that I have edited seperately and now I want to join them together into one continuous video.
Should be simple enough. I thought!
I opened up the first part of the video and then attempted to add the second part of the video by going into 'File' and on to 'Insert media file to timeline'. The dialogue box opens and I click on 'Insert Video'. I get 'File format mismatch'. I have tried swapping them over and opening either one first and adding the second. No joy.
The only difference I can see between them is one has 'mpeg' in the file description and the other hasn't. I am assuming this is perhaps the problem as they are both VSP files.
If this is the case how do I easily rectify this and if it isn't the problem what might it be?

You could try importing the two VSP¡¦s to the library, then drag to the timeline, that may work. Especially if you insert to a new project.

'File format mismatch' are hard to identify. What you are trying to do is called ¡¥nesting¡¦ inserting one project inside another.
I do not use this process, but prefer to render my project to a single video files.
I would render one project adding the resultant mpeg to the second project, then complete the full project edit.

I also do the same as Trevor. I would render one project to its own video file, then insert that video file into the other project. I mainly work with DV-AVI, so that additional render is not a problem. If you are using MPEG-2 files that extra render may cause some quality loss, but that would be in the eye of the beholder.

I had tried your suggestion, Andrew, but it didn't work. I couldn't get either one to transfer into the library but I do appreciate the suggestion.
Your suggestion, Black Lab., was one I had thought of thinking that I could render them and then put them into a file and burn to DVD. and by so doing they would come together as a single video. Even if they didn't I could bring them back into VS again and then join them.
However, when I came to consider rendering them I couldn't find any information on how to do so. Either in the handbook, that is pretty useless anyway, or in any of the tutorials. I wondered if this was part of the 'burn to DVD process. Perhaps you would advise.

Hi Roy
To render your project to a single video file you use Share-Create Video File.
The hard part is deciding which option to select.
As one of your projects contain Mpeg files it may be best to use their properties. Assuming the video files are dvd compatible. (DVD-Pal)
Right click an Mpeg in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
Assuming DVD-Pal.............
Edit your project properties to match these settings.
Share--Create Video Files using ¡¥Same as Project Properties¡¦
You can either render the second project using the same settings, or add the Mpeg to the second project to complete editing.

By the way-- what version of VS are you using?

I've gone back to the original file and opened up and continued to edit from there as I couldn't join the files no matter what I tried. It means having to edit anew the second project, but, so what, it's all good practice and I'll know that it's all together.

The VS I'm using incidentally is Pro X2.
