dv recording not working on Video Studio 9 trial

Post by jeffrshaw »

I have the trial version of Video Studio 9 and the dv capture from my camcorder works fine. When I try to record a .avi file back to the camcorder tape, it just hangs the program. Any ideas what is wrong?

Not all digital video cameras will accept exports of DV from your computer. The specifications would have to say something like 'DV in/out'. Cameras without the 'in' function are quite common in Europe where this feature is apparently disabled because of licence fee considerations...

By the way, when you say you are trying to export 'AVI', I assume you mean 'DV/AVI' rather than raw AVI...

Yes as Ken says here in UK / Europe many DV cameras have both DV-in and AV-in disabled because the tax officers decided that with those functions a camera was classified as a VCR with the attendant higher tax, more and more cameras are now appearing here with these functions available and perhaps if you told us the make/model of your camera and where you are in this great wide world we may be able to check specifications in order to assist you.

the problem is not the camcorder

Post by jeffrshaw »

In response, I am in the US. The problem would not seem to be the camcorder, which is a Panasonic PV-GS35. I have performed this function in the trial versions of 2 other capture/editing programs, Adobe Premiere and Power Director 4 and it works perfect in those programs. I am trying to perform the "DV Recording" function in VS 9 of a .avi file.

What type of .avi?

Post by GeorgeW »

What type of .avi file are you trying to export?

DV .avi? Type-1 or Type-2? Is it the same .avi file as you used in the other Trial versions? How long is the .avi video? and how large is the video on your hard drive? What is the video resolution and framerate?

DV .avi - Type 2. Yes it is the same file used in the other programs. 3.3gb in size and 14:56 min. long. 720x480 4:3 24 bits, 29.9 framerate.

Win XP error report

Post by jeffrshaw »

The error report that Win XP eventually wants to send back to Microsoft after VS 9 finally bombs out indicates that Quicktime Player failed.

Try Type-1

Post by GeorgeW »

Can you try a small DV Type-1 file to see if that works?

Also, there's a free utility called WinDV that you can use to import/export DV .avi's. It also helps prevent dropped frames by utilizing a small "buffer" during the transfer process.

This was not the only file I tried. I tried a number of files of varying sizes and none of them work. Does VS9 allow you to capture a file as Type-1? All the files captured using VS9 were Type-2. I tried WinDV and it does not work with my camcorder.

Type-1

Post by GeorgeW »

that's interesting that WinDV did not work either.

I believe you can capture Type-1, but I'm away from my editing machine to try it.

Can you just use a small video in a VS9 project, and go to the share step -- create video file, and make sure the settings are for a DV Type-1 .avi on your output. Then try to export that Type-1 file to your camcorder?

This isn't solving the problem, but just trying to identify if it's related to the Type-1 vs. Type-2 on your system.

Just a thought --- have you tried upgrading Quicktime?

Another item to check would be whether Windows XP (if that's what you are running) has installed a Network Bridge for the IEEE 1394 adapter, and/or whether the ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) for the adapter is enabled.

I would disable the ICF for the IEEE 1394 adapter, and uninstall the Network Bridge if you don't network using FireWire.

I tried creating a Type-1 .avi file with VS9 and then tried DV Recording again to my camcorder.....it does not work either. The Quicktime version that VS9 installs is the latest version. The suggestion about changing the firewire 1394 settings in WinXP are kind of missing the point where I stated that capture works fine and 2 other programs capture and record back to the camcorder just fine. I tried WinDV and it captures and writes back also. Doesn't that rule out that the problem is with WinXP and the firewire setup?

When I tried WinDV last night, I noticed the checkbox next to the capture button. WHen I check this, the capture and record functions work. Without that checked, it does not. What is that meant for as it is not labeled?
