Vs 10 and vs x2 on same computer
I was planning to update from 10 plus to X2 and noticed that corel had a sale today for X2. The sale was 49.95 for the full version of X2 and 49.95 for the upgrade to X2. So obviously it made sense to buy the new version for the same price. Now the question is; I am not upgrading so I can keep the vs 10 on the computer. It works perfect. Should I try to install the x2 software on the same computer? Should I remove 10 first and just forget it to avoid conflicts? Also is there anything in 10 that I would not have in X2 or would miss in X2. I am planning on getting a new camera soon and that would be mini dvd tape format with HD. I don't use vs 10 for any capture activities now. The computer is a amd 4200 dual core and seems to handle video on vs 10 fine. I would assume x2 would work just as well. Thanks doug

There is no need to remove VS10. When you install even an upgrade version of X2, you get the entire program, which installs in a completely different folder to VS10. The latter is installed in a Ulead Systems folder, whereas X2 installs in a Corel folder. The two programs are quite separate. You will merely be asked for the VS10 serial number when installing X2 (as well as the latter's S/N). I have VS10+, 11.5+ and X2 on the same computer, with no problems in any of them.
The only thing I use VS10+ for is to export my completed HDV project back to my HDV Canon Hv20 camera. X2 and VS11.5+ both have difficulties doing this with Canon HDV cameras. So did VS10 but they brought out a special Canon patch for that which is still available if you have not yet used it. We thought they would have worked in the code to VS11.5+ and X2, but apparently not.
But that, and the ability to be able to import .vob files directly, rather than first convert them to their original mpeg-2 format, are the only things I can think of for the moment that VS10 can do which X2 cannot. And X2 has a number of extra useful bells and whistles over VS10...

Some people archive their finished products on tape. However in doing so run the risk of the tape loosing its magnetic qualities (drop-off), and thus loosing the finished product.
But I will say that most storage mediums have their faults, discs subject to scratches, tapes to drop-off, hard-drives to just quitting altogether...

Apart from just archiving a project, sending an edited project in HDV back to your camera has the added advantage of being able to view your finished HDV in high definition format when you plug the Canon HV10/20/30 -- and I believe, the other brand HDV cameras -- into the HDMI plug of a high definition flat screen TV set. That turns the camera in effect into a high definition player. If you don't yet have a Blu-Ray burner or player, you can still watch your high definition edited masterpieces this way.
For what it is worth, I have been doing this for years with standard definition DV tapes and now with my HDV projects, and I have never once had the problem Ron/Vidoman refers to... not that I am saying it might not happen...

If the tapes are maintained properly then it will take years before you notice this. I have a few old BetaMax tapes, that I believe are about 24 yrs old. They are starting to show the fall-off, and I must say that my ex-wife had them for some time, and didn't take good care of them...
