X2 Demo will not load

Post by rweingart »

Hello newbie here. Well, not a newbie to v-studio, I have V9 and it works fine.

I decided to download and try the demo of X2. When I try to run the app, it crashes just after the splash screen finishes. I see the editor in the background, then as soon as the splash screen closes, the whole program is gone.
If I try to run V9 just after that, the same thing happens. If I reboot, then try V9, works fine. Then try X2, it crashes.

I emailed tech support (if you call it that) and they had me try a Direct X update. Tried it, still no-go.
Then they told me that:
"Please be advised that trial versions does not qualify for free support via email."

OK, so they want me to pay to try to get a demo version working? And what would be the odds that I actually buy their software??

Anyway, here are my specs:
P4 2.5 GHz, 2 Meg RAM, 512Meg video ram
XP Pro w/SP3

Thanks,
-Rob

Did you try re-downloading? Could be a corrupt download.

Thanks for the ideas. I re-downloaded, no good.
I checked those links and they are more for real system/program crashes or hw/sw issues.
Mine I cant even load and it gives no messages at all.

I can either gamble and get the real version or just wait until next time a release comes out (and try a competitors program). I have a feeling the real version is the same as the demo, just unlocked.

No, the full version does not simply unlock the trial. In fact, we often recommend that the trial version be uninstalled prior to installing the full version, to avoid potential problems.

But if there is some kind of conflict with your system will you have the same problem with the full version?

Check for these things:

Event Viewer: Check this area of XP and report back with what's causing the application error. It's likely to be a corrupted DLL but Event viewer will mention what causes the problem in some way or another.

Codec Packs: If you have heaps of Codec Packs installed it's possible you have a codec conflict that inhibits how VS initiates....

Clevo, thanks for the ideas.
I looked in Event Log and there is no event at all when it shuts down. I see everything else, nothing for X2.

I uninstalled the full codec pack I had, still no good. This one hade me thinking though.

Only have like 20 more days on my "trial".

After uninstalling the full codec pack, which it is recommended to not install full codec packs, try reinstalling or doing a repair install on VS. Just uninstalling a codec pack may not correct the damage it might have done. Reinstalling or repair installing will allow VS to replace those files..

Uninstalled the codecs (all of it). Reinstalled X2 demo.
Still will not load.

If it helps to explain, the program stops when the little blue/light blue scroll thing on the splash screen stops moving. It is like the last file it needs to start is messed up. I wish I knew what it was loading at this time.

Getting pretty bummed out.

Just in case you still have a corrupted download (I acknowledge you downloaded it again) - do you have access to another computer you could try it on?

As a last resort you can try it out on a Virtual Computer

Never heard of the virtual computer. Pretty cool, but that is a lot of work... At least I still have V9 running.
I have a laptop, but it is still running Win2K (and it is very happy).

Maybe I will have my sister try it out as I just installed XP on her PC (she can do it as a favor).

I am really dissapointed that the tech support would just blow me off when I am a potential purchaser. I need their level of knowledge of the product to understand why this could happen. Otherwise I am just hunting.

Yes, I've never understood Corel's refusal to support trial products, thereby losing potential customers if they can't figure it out themselves.
