Overlay edits causing freezing

I'm attempting to use lengthy overlays for the first time to help edit down a friend's concert i filmed with 2 cams. i figured it would be easier to split the audio off one and line both video tracks up with that audio, split up the tracks then shift clips around appropriately. I'm thinking this may be a problem with corrupt portions of video, but more than several times the program freezes when utilizing the overlay in some way either splitting clips or simply moving the track back and forth. any thoughts?

You have given very little information to go on, and we have no idea what kind of system you are running. To help us help you please read the following and provide the requested info.

You are probably doing it the way I do anyway, but just in case you are doing something different here are some links:

Yes Steve, but his problem is VS is freezing when he uses the overlay tracks.

Sorry for such little info. i guess i considered it an easier question to answer. Anyway, your links have been helpful. I think there may have been some corrupt footage of VS just didn't like the way i cut it up. It's a concert and i had multiple songs I was trying to sync so i captured each dv and then made in/out for each song then made seperate files in the library. so when i dragged down camera 2 for example, at some point during the editing process the program would freeze up. this did NOT happen when i went back and seperately captured each song as its own file into the library...so far...but i'm not finished and i'll have to see what happens. the time sync is a little difficult but i will take your advice about creating some sort of time code. i wish there was a counter on both camers i'm using.

I"m running VS 11+. Also, not sure if this may be associated with a Vista problem since Vista seems to randomly do things no one expects it to do or tells it to do. Have you had issues running 11+ with Vista home premium?

Have you installed the Power Pack and update patches?

I installed one of the patches and when i re-started the program it had wiped out my entire library of captured video for some reason. i have yet to install the other update until i finish with my current project which i've modified a bit due to these issues. the freezing is no longer the problem if i do it as i've described above. to make it easier on myself i split audio off the tripod cam for better sound, lined both tracks up on seperate overlay tracks vs utilizing the main, then made cuts. the reason being is for some reason, even if i disable ripple, when i delete a clip from the main it did not leave a space, it was just easier for me to visualize by leaving empty spaces every other clip cutting back/forth from the 2 cameras and then dragging into overlay #1. then from there i dragged it all up to the main. Now, here's the new problem. although the scissor cuts were made in exactly the same spots on each track and both tracks were synched to sound, now my tripod cam is not synched exactly with the sound. this happened on my last project and since i didn't ultimately place both tracks as one in the main, i just slid the overlay tracks over a bit to re-align and get good sync. now i can't do that. the video on those tracks is just a tad behind the audio. it's kind of a pain to add a bit of time to each clip. sorry for the long post, i'm just getting a little confused as to why these problems are occurring.

Hi David
As far as I know you can cut the video in the overlay tracks using VS 11.
If you were to place the best/main video in the top track.
Place the second in the overlay track, sync¡¦ to top track. You can cut the overlay track, in fact I believe you can cut all tracks at once.
Try this.
Select the first overlay frame to cut, switch to project playback and hit the scissors.
Repeat with the end frame. Delete this section from the overlay track. Do not delete from the top track.
Repeat for another section.
When complete select the first overlay clip, right click the frame in the preview screen:-
Select Fit to Screen and keep Aspect Ratio.
To apply these settings the rest, copy and paste the attributes of the first clip to all clips.
Ok
Audio
At the moment both audios are playing. If you successfully cut both tracks (top and overlay) then its just a matter of selecting which clips to mute.

Thank you for the input. That is pretty much what I have done prior to trying new things but wasn't sure if there was a better/easier way of going about it. part of the problem is one camera films in HDV, the other is SDV so even though aspect ratios are kept the same on the overlay, i'm still getting ratio changes, which is fine and expected until i get 2 HDV.

When i perform what you recommended trying to cut both tracks simultaneously, i am unable to do them at the same time so i do them seperately without moving the timing in the exact same place. then, when i play the project through, the overlay track is a little behind the audio for some reason or vise versa, i can't remember exactly what happened the last time i did this. either way they weren't completely sycnched and i had to slide the overlay tracks back a second or 2

I tried what you recommended but i can't cut simultaneously. so i did them seperately then when watching the whole project noticed the overlay track was a bit behind the audio, or vise versa can't remember exactly since it was a few weeks ago at this point. either way i had to slide the overlay track backwards a few seconds. no idea why it didn't sync. and getting rid of ripple editing does not allow leaving a space open on the main track, is that normal? i was under the assumption that ripple editing would close in the gaps but when i disable it it isn't leaving gaps except in the overlay tracks.
