Unable to read my own post on best AVCHD system

My apologies for interrupting the technical discussions, but I can't find anywhere else - Moderator Groups wouldn't accept a PM.

I have just posted a new topic on this forum (System requirements for being able to handle AVCHD) and I now find that I cannot read my own post! I get the error message:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /var/www/html/EN/includes/bbcode.php on line 222

I have used formatting in the post, as well as a URL, so presumably that is the problem. I've tried both Firefox and IE7 and both give the same error. I've also checked that I can still read other posts in the forum.

Has anyone any idea of the cause of the problem? I've just upgraded my XP to SP3, but I find it hard to believe that that could be the cause.

I can't open it either. Possibly the post is somehow corrupted. You may be better off re-posting.

Thanks. I will, if I can remember what I said, that is. That's what comes of using fancy formatting!

Perhaps the mods would be kind enough to delete it.

I was actually quoting a couple of points that you made in a post earlier this year in March.

Firstly you said that VideoStudio 11.5+ was necessary. As I have 11+, have I got it correct that I can update to 11.5+ with the appropriate download?

Secondly, you said that a pretty good system was needed; you mentioned a double core CPU. My comment was that my system seemed not good enough - was I correct?

And, finally, I asked should I simply avoid AVCHD with my system? Looking at your much superior system details, is the answer, "Yes, avoid AVCHD"?

Yes, I would have to say your system just could not get a look-in with AVCHD. I am afraid it could not edit it, even with SmartProxy enabled as you require at least a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 with HT for that. Probably a lot more RAM than the 512 MB you have -- though that is the least of your worries. And from my own experience with editing AVCHD on such a P4 (possibly referred to in that earlier thread...?), I managed to edit OK but thought the editing had failed since the playback was jerky. But as it turns out, when I transferred the edited AVCHD to a new Core 2 Duo, it played smoothly. So it seems that you need possibly more computer resources for smooth playback than you do even for editing!

And on top of that are some problems VS11.5+/12 (and at least some other editing packages) have with AVCHD -- including an apparent refusal to deal with certain codecs developed by the camera manufacturers in the latest models of Panasonic and Canon AVCHD cameras; plus a blip following transitions inserted in edited AVCHD (covered elsewhere on this Board).

As for the other part of your question, if your version 11+ is registered, then yes, you can upgrade to 11.5+. First you need the update patch of 6 November 2007 (available to everyone); and then the 8 November 'Hot Pack' which is only available to registered users. (You should avoid the later 'Hot Fix' patch as it only covers a problem in the initial installation of VS11...). The eventual version number should be 11.5.0157.2 PLUS.

Berzelius -- I have now read your other post. AVCHD is not, of course, 'captured' via Firewire. It is simply a transfer of files from the camera's hard drive or flash card.

Re my answer above, I perhaps should have added that your current computer and VS11+ would have no difficulty at all in handling video from a HDV camera (captured via Firewire), or editing it. The cameras tend to be larger than AVCHD cameras, and capture done in real time, rather than the quick file transfer method of AVCHD. But it is MUCH easier to edit, and the results are at least the same in terms of quality compared to AVCHD -- though of course the HDV mpeg-2 files are a fair bit larger than AVCHD mpeg-4.
