System requirements for being able to handle AVCHD

I'm finally thinking of upgrading from producing videos on my digital camera to using a proper camcorder. However, I am concerned that if buy one using AVCHD that I won't be able to use VideoStudio to edit it with my present setup - I have VideoStudio 11+ and my system is as per my system button.
VideoStudio Help says that I should be able to import AVCHD - I have a couple of Firewire ports on my USB 2.0 cards. However, posts that I have seen on this forum and a bit of searching on the forum suggest that things are much more complicated than Corel claim.
In particular, I have taken notice of a post by Ken Berry dated 26 March 2008. In it he states:
1) By all accounts, this [capturing AVCHD] works quite fine in VS11.5+. I understand that I can upgrade to 11.5+.
2) I trust you have a powerful computer -- at least a Core 2 Duo or Quad -- as this is apparently a sine qua non for AVCHD editing and playback As you can see from my system specs, I'm probably far from meeting this requirement!
Should I therefore avoid any camcorders using AVCHD like the plague?
