Having Trouble Burning to Disc

Gotta quick question I'm hopeing somebody can help me with. I just made a 15 minute video of my girls soccer team using VS11 (Vista), and I am trying to now burn it to disc. When I get to the burn menu, it says I require 1 GB of memory, and that I have 3.7 available. I select the 4.7 GB option. All of the bars down below clearly show that I am :in the green"

When I try to burn it, I get an "unspecified error" and then all the numbers go red and all of a sudden I now get readings that I don't have enough space on the disc.

Basically, I can't burn a DVD? I've done it before. Not sure why this time I'm having problems.

That's the space required on the dvd.
How are you for space on your hard drive? As VS will need some for temp files.

I just tried an 8 GB DL disc and I got the same "unspecified error" and the program just stopped burning.

Each time I lose my DVD menu, I have to go back and do it all over. Frustrating. I select the "save disc image" option, but so far I can't see how I retrieve that???

This is really making me crazy. I try to work through all of my VS problems. I work for 40 hours on a video for my soccer players, and now I can't even burn it for them.

It would be nice if ULEAD had some info about this random "unspecified error." Doesn't really help me troubleshoot anything.

If you have Nero or a similar suite, like Roxio Easy Disc Creator, then I would be going the 'disc image' route first. Normally that would be a file in your working directory which has an .iso extension. Nero, Roxio or a freeware program like ImgBurn, can then burn an iso file to DVD.

You don't tell us what format your edited video is in: right click on it inside Video Studio and copy all its properties here please.

Third, to save your menus, then each time you exist the burn module, ignore the message box which tells you that VS is automatically saving your project. As far as any of us here is aware, it does not such thing, and this is why you are losing your menus etc each time. Instead when you close the burning module and are back in the editing module, go to File > Save to manually save the project (or Save As to give the whole project a new name). Then, next time you open that project, then open the burning module everything should be there as you left it.

Finally, it would definitely be worthwhile if go to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated November 2008 and can be found at http://tinyurl.com/6jj2lw
Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular -- and probably now also in X2 -- which appear linked to Windows updates. The menu preview , 'building preview graph' and other problems in the burning module seem to be amongst them.

Note that DirectX is not included in the usual pattern of Windows automatic updates. It has to be done every so often by the user manually. So unless you have recently done this, you are probably still using the original, non-updated version of DirectX which came with your computer.

First let me apologize for my hasty post. I know better than to simple ask without posting any project properties. I was in a rush, because 17 girls were counting on me to have this burned for them. I never imagined burning would be my problem...

Here are the properties:


NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7200 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

What I don't understand is where this problem came from all of a sudden? I have been burning DVD using VS11 without issues. Just last week I burned 12 copies of an hour long documentary I made. Today I can't burn a 12 minute high school soccer video without getting the 5.0.0 Unspecified Error.

Here's what I did to trouble-shoot:
1) I searched the forum and found countless threads of users experiencing the same exact problem...discouraging.
2) I tried uninstalling Roxio...no luck
3) I tried burning a small video that I burned last week...Unspecified Error
4) I DID burn a DVD through Roxio and Windows Media Player
5) I tried re-installing VS11...Unspecified Error
6) I then tried using a different computer (my lap-top from work) to burn the same exact files using VS and I was able to burn the DVD no problem.

So, the problem appears to be a VS thing, not my files. And it turned up literally overnight. My lap-top worked fine, but not my desk-top.

I will try that patch? I guess it's all I've got right now.

Was there a chance you have installed something on your desktop since you last created a DVD?

Updated drivers, installed new software, a new game etc etc

When you try to burn a DVD, the error ¡§unspecified error 5.0.0¡¨ appears.


Answer: If Error 5.0.0 appears, it means that one or more of the files in the project is damaged. This could be a video, music or overlay file.

Try saving the project as an MPEG file. If the same error message appears when you save the project, close the program and create a copy of your project file.

Remove files from the project and try re-saving until you have identified the damaged file. Open the original project file and delete the damaged file.

Yes, I came across this "it's not us, it's you" explanation in my search. This is why I tried burning the same exact files on a different computer, and had success.

Clevo, no nothing recently. I'm not a gamer. I'm on dial-up, soI don't download anything.

Could there have been some kind of a Windows update that did something?

I've just had the same trouble with a trial version of X2 Pro. What I did to solve it was to use a bit of "computer voodoo"

I made sure that the temp folder was set correctly (eg. enough space on disc and permission was ok on the dir).

I "burned" a smal file to .iso and DVD folders, and made sure that it worked. After that I could burn propperly again...

Since I've found loads of references to it, I'd be grateful for a real solution to the 5:0:0 error.
So far all the answers I've seen are wishful thinking about corrupted files, which is clearly not the answer and just wastes more of everyoines time.

I've been using Videostudio for years, but burning a DVD with V11 cant get past the first stage if using anything other than MPEG files. Well thanks, but if I want proper chapters where all my individual files are, I shouldn't have to rerender them individually, or search through a single mpeg file just to remake them

Is there really no proper solution other than to pay more money. Is that Ulead's intention?

Those error message numbers have meaning only to the programmers, and not just any programmer. So for most of us regulars on the forums, it really is just guess work. When we do find a solution, we try to remember, and/or place that info where it can be accessed easily.

I can't speak for Corel or Ulead, but we try not to waste anyones time, and we too would like to know a real solution that works for all.... However since we're dealing with computers I'm not holding my breath, too many variables involved...

But that's all you can burn a DVD with. Or do you mean you are going straight from your project to Share>Create DVD. If that's the case you might want to try first going to Share>Create Video File, then use the resulting MPEG-2 to burn to DVD.
