Which codec to play mpegs?

I have VS8 and captured a small clip from my camcorder, edited out some junk and saved it in mpeg format. My Windows Media Player plays it fine so I emailed it to a friend and when he tries to play it, it says Media Player can't find the right codec. We both have Win XP with all updates and newest Media Player although he doesn't have VS. Any suggestions?
