Corrupted Project File

Hi, I¡¦ve been using VS11+ for quite a while now but now I have a problem which I can¡¦t resolve and can¡¦t find any info in the forum.
I¡¦ve been working on a fairly large project (1.3MB) which is now crashing every time I try and load it. The problem first became apparent when I was working on this project and then the program suddenly crashed (I was manually adjusting audio volume of a sound track with the audio rubber banding at the time). After successfully restarting VS, I tried to open that project again but it crashes at 99% of loading the MPG files.
I have lost about 8 hours worth of editing because of this seemingly corrupted file. Is there any way of recovering this file or do I have to start again?
Are there any tips to preventing this?
Project Settings are:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
Thanks & regards
Dave

1.3 MB is worth about 1 minutes worth of video.

The VSP (Project) file is 1376KB. The folder containg all the MPEGs is obvoiusly much larger. There are links to a large number of small clips (approx 50?)

If the VSP won't open then I am afraid you will probably have to start over.
Tips to prevent this? Save different versions of the project. After you do some editing save as ProjectA. Do some more editing, save as ProjectB, etc. Then, if ProjectE doesn't open you can go back to ProjectD and (hopefully) figure out what went wrong.

It could be worthwile to try the following. First move al the mpegs to a diiferent location. You could also rename the folder they're in. Then try to open the project file. If this works: save the project file under a different name. Place the mpegs back to where they were and open the new project file.

Thanks for all the advice so far.
I did try copying the folder containing the MPEGs and renaming it to something else. I know this would have caused a linking problem but it would at least tell me if the VSP file was ok. However, opening the VSP file still caused it to crash after getting to 99% of loading the MPEG links. It does sound like the VSP file is unretrievable.
I have now begun the practice of saving progressive versions of the project file in order to prevent future occurences of this problem (as suggested).
I have been using the program solidly for about 12 months now and never had this happen before. The program has crashed several times in the past but has never corrupted the saved project file. But I guess these things happen.

While it could be a major pain, by re-linking the clips one by one, you might at least identify which one causes the program to crash. Then if you Skip that one, you might be able to open the project file, and perhaps re-process/recapture the problem clip before trying to reinsert it in the project.

Hi Ken,
I actually moved all the MPEG clips into an incorrect location in order to do this. The plan was then bring them back into the correct location a few at a time in order to find the corrupt MPEG.
However, the program still crashed even with all the MPEGs (and all audio clips & images) in the wrong location. Therefore it points to a corrupt VSP file so it seems.

Not sure but....
If you move all of the clips to another folder to force the relink message,
When you link one file the program could possibly be finding all the others as they are now in the same location as that first one you re-linked to.
Try moving a few files into "Folder A" and a few more into "Folder B" and so on - thus splitting them up. Now see if it re links the first few and nags for the rest. If so you can try Kens suggestion above.

I just tried your suggestion but unfortunately it still didn't work. I even moved all the data (ie: MPEGs, images, audio files) out of that folder and just left the VSP and UPD file in the folder. When opening the project file, it crashed at 99% of loading the MPEGs.
I conclude that the VSP file is the problem rather than any files it is linking to.
Thanks for all the suggestions - I know to do progressive saving rather than saving over the same file all the time.
