November release of direct x 9 can be downloaded here:

MODERATOR EDIT: Please note that Microsoft periodically updates DirectX, but doesn't always change the version number. They do, however, note the latest update (i.e. DirectX November 2008 Update). Make sure you have the current update of the current version.

Downloading it now. I might add that it is a whopping 86.2 Mbs.

Thank you....:)

I've made this an Announcement so that it will remain at the top of the forum, easier to find..;)

Thanks!

Nice link too, not needing the extra step of going thru WGA.

I expect to see the link used a lot in future posts!

Just wondering - Do I need to install this Direct X 9 on my machine with Video Studio 12 ????? I figured there was a reason for posting it, but SEARCHED and couldn't readily find out if I need to install this or not.

Welcome to the forums (at last!!!)  I have removed your extra post. As for the debug message, I would just ignore it. I have received several of those this morning alone on this Board. I think it is caused by the fact that Corel moved the Board's server overnight, and this seems to have upset some aspects of the Board's operations. May take a while to get this ironed out.

Now, on your main question, DirectX comes as part of Windows -- with XP you get DirectX 9.0c, with Vista you get DirectX 10. So it is not a question of installing DirectX -- it is already there if your operating system is Windows (which I assume it is, since VS12 will only operate on Windows!).

The question, rather, is whether you have ever updated the version of DirectX which came with your computer. I am assuming in this case that you have never done so -- as it is not a part of the automatic Windows updates. Always has to be updated manually.

Only some people run into the sort of problems that the DirectX update can fix, so bear that in mind if, for instance, you have trouble in the menu-building or preview part of the burn module of VS. A number of the automatic Windows updates this year seem to have caused these problems, and the updated DirectX is required to fix them.

Yes, that's an estimated 24 hours on dial-up, which is all we have.

Ken, I posted a thread about not being able to burn even very simple, small projects (Vista)....even though just 2 weeks ago, I had no problems. I'm really hoping that one of the Windows updates affected my machine, as you implied, and that this Direct X update will fix it back.

I've tried everything else, to include a system restore. If the update doesn't work, I guess I'm looking at a system recovery.

Is there anyway I can download the Direct X update on my lap-top and then bring it home and transfer it to my desk-top?

Best,
Blair

Hi,
actually one can find 2 different DirectX November updates: one is DirectX SDK (DXSDK_Nov2008) which I could download and installed correctly within the "C:/Program files" folder (by the way, can I now unistall the previous version I had, of July 2007, and which is still there?). The second one is DirectX_nov2008_ redist, which I've some problems with, since once the corresponding downloaded .exe file is executed, it produces a bunch of extracted files mostly with a .cab extension, which tend to "prefer" to end up in a "C:/Users/My name/AppData/Local/Temp" folder. Is this second one needed and what should I do with it? Can i cancel all this stuff?
Thanks for your help

You just need to go HERE and follow the directions. It's just a couple of clicks. The redist file is for developers.
