When you go to the final Share module there is a button to choose normalizing the entire project. This should give you reasonable even volume throughout the length of the project.

I can't find the normalize feature when i export to any other format. I do find a check box for normalize when i choose create disc. The reason for asking this is because i use VS to output a DVD complaint file which i author on another program - hence the requirement to normalise the outputted file

Oops you are right!
I had forgotten that the normalize function was in the burning module.
In that case I am afraid that from within VS you are not going to be able to normalise the entire audio.
The only workaround I can think of is to use a third party app to do it.
You could download a free program called Audacity.
From within VS go to the share tab and create an audio file of the project. Load that into Audacity then do a normalise.
Load the new soundtrack back into one of the audio tracks of VS and remember to mute everything else in the timeline. Then go ahead and create the video file.
If I have to do this I use Nero WaveEditor because I have the Nero Suite loaded but Audacity will do it as well.
A bit round about I am afraid!

You can do it, with a bit of a work around. Start a new project. Use Insert Media to insert your VSP project to the timeline. This will make your VSP act like one large clip. You can now use the Normalize audio filter to normalize the audio for the entire VSP. Save and output.
