How does one control ther audio fade in length of individual video clips. I can set the value in preferences but what if different clips on the same timeline need different fade-in or out times compared to the default value set in preferences??

You can use the rubber banding.
Click on the audio
1. You will see a horizontal line on it
2. Point the mouse to the desired location
3. Hold the mouse and drag the line to the desired level.
Dragging lower reduces the volume and vice-versa.
