Capturing from a DV Camera makes video extremely pixelated

Post by KingKRool2002 »

I have DVD MovieFactory 4. I tried capturing video from my DV camera (JVC GR-D72) in AVI format, but it is extremely pixelated in both the preview viewer and the main DVD creation screen. When I view the same file in Windows Media Player, it is extremely small in frame size, but not pixelated at all. If I change the ratio to 200% (instead of 100%) for viewing, the video looks about the same as in MovieFactory 4 (in terms of pixelation). How do I get the video to be crystal-clear in MovieFactory? I've tried changing various options in Capture mode's advanced settings, but nothing seems to change the pixelation. Also, in video and audio plug-in settings, the general tab shows up always, but whenever I try to view the advanced tab, I get an error message saying that MovieFactory has encountered an error and needs to be closed. I believe that that tab may have some sort of resoultion option that may fix the pixelation problem, but I cannot access that tab at all. Also, I can only select MPEG and AVI Formats without getting an error message that basically says that the format is not supported, and thus it goes back to the default format (MPEG), which doesn't work properly because the video bit rate is too high (according to the error message). How do I change the video bit rate? Because of all of these things, the only format I can use is AVI, and it is exremely pixelated. Is there something wrong with the program? Someone please let me know how to fix these problems.

Thank you.

Is the video clear in your camera viewfinder when you play it back (not connected to the PC)? Also, how are you connecting the camera to your PC - firewire is the preferred way? Are you using the AV-DV passthrough setting in your camera?. Does the capture window recognise your camera? (first box on top left I think). It is better to change the capture properties to AVI and let your PC convert to DVD format after you have authored the content.

The video is clear in the viewfinder/screen of the camera when I play the video back on the camera. I connect it via a USB port because my PC doesn't have any firewire ports. I'm not sure what the AV-DV passthrough setting is. I think that the capture window recognizes the camera because it does display the video in the preview mode when I go to Capture mode from the main screen and it does capture the video, it's just that the pixelation is terrible. I have the format set to AVI, is that what you mean when you say to change the capture properities to AVI?

I use the AV-DV passthrough for Firewire. I have never used USB with a movie camera, other posts on this board and the old board warn about using USB to capture, maybe this is part of the problem. When you play the DV tape in the preview window without capturing, is it OK or does it only pixelate when you hit the capture button?

USB Capture

Using the USB connection will degrade your video.

A firewire connection to transfer your dv recorded video to your computer will result in MUCH better quality.

The USB connection is usually intended for lower resolution/bitrate streaming and copying digital stills over to your computer (if your camcorder takes still pics)
