A friend of mine bought a new hp520 laptop (Vista) and installed VS10+. After capturing video from a dvd we noticed that when we playback the captured video its just really distorted and blurry. Same goes when we multi-trim the video, when we press the spacebar button to scan the video in normal speed, the playback is really distorted. If we scan the video using the left and right keys all is well. Please help.

Have you installed the Vista update patch? VS10 was written before Vista was released and is only compatible with that patch. Moreover, when you use it under Vista, with the patch installed, the desktop setting of Vista resets to Vista Basic as long as VS10 is open. But it reverts to the Aero look once you close VS10.

Somehow i failed to realize that. In my acer laptop running vista, it does change settings to basic when VS10 is started. However, it doesn't in my friend's computer. Downloading the update now. Will try later. Thanks

Ken,
i tried to install the vista patch to no avail. the playback is still distorted/blurred beyond recognition. hope you could help. i also noticed that when inserting video files to the library or timeline, when i play back the video it works fine as long as the file is in avi format. however, if its an mpg that was captured from a dvd, i cannot playback the video.
pls help

dvd recorders record to their own proprietary format, which although conforms to dvd standards is not quite the same as normal PAL/NTSC sizes.
I've done loads of work converting dvds made in this way for companies that then can't use them.
As you say you can use other files fine, I suspect it is this that is causing your problem.
Try looking at the file properties and matching your project properties to that.
Try running the dvd recorder made mpeg file through something like squared5's mpegstreamclip
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/WebPages ... rammes.htm
to make a dv.avi file, but ensure you make it to the size you need 720x576 PAL or 720x480 NTSC, not same as source file.
Check my other posting re ac3 audio.

thanks for the reply skier-hughes. but how come VS10+ playback works on my other laptop? The laptop having problems with the playback is an HP520 (while the laptop having audio problems is an acer4520G.) I've tried converting the video file from mpeg to avi and it could playback while on edit mode. but when i tried to multi trim the file the video was really distorted while letting it play. once you pause it the pic is really clear.
Are there any specific settings required for the HP?
