Or most likely audio connectors to the sound card, with s-video to the graphics card?

The break out box for the ATI card has all the connections for audio, composite video and S-video, the software will default to using the audio connections on the box. If you connect the audio cables anywhere else you will have to change your input in to the sound card, or other device.

Here is a review of your video card and capabilities and the break out boxes.

Gentlemen,
I hang my head in shame! I'm sorry to have to say that the video card is a 64MB ATI Radeon 8500DV (All in Wonder) , not the Audigy as I suggested. I misread the computer spec.. There is a Creative Sound Blaster card installed and I unthinkingly quoted that instead of the ATI card. I do apologise. To my knowledge Creative only do sound cards, not video, as you so rightly say, Skier-Hughes.
Back to the drawing board. I'll check for new drivers and work through your advice, Tyamada. And, yes, I have been connecting the S-Video connector into the break out box and the sound leads likewise and get nothing. The breakout box has input and output ports on opposite sides of the box and it's not entirely clear which side is 'in' and which 'out'. I've tried both sides without success. The firewire link on the card works fine with the NV MX500, as I said. I'll have a look at the internet links quoted and see what I can get from those.
Many thanks for your time everybody, I do appreciate it.

YOu say the video card won't accept sound ir video.
The dv cam will accept video but no sound.

We know then that video is being output via that cable.

I wonder if the audio cables are faulty, or the ports on the cam? If you plug the cam into the tv and play do you get audio and video?

Rollason:

From the pictures on the link I pointed you to the input side is the one with the 1394 (firewire) connection.

Have you tried to use the ATI software to capture video/audio.
I had problems with my ATI audio, it seems that it was always muted when I tried to capture. You have to check the control panel audio setting to ensure it's not muted.

Thanks for all that's gone before.
I've invested in the Canopus ADVC 110 as that seems to be the easiest way out of the problem ultimately. A bit expensive but sometimes beggars can't be choosers and as it throughputs DV as well as taking S/VHS then that should be fine.
Again, many thanks,
Regards, Roy.

To me, it is not expensive if it works! The products you buy that don't work, now that's expensive.
