Here is my problem. I have been able to capture video from my Sony digital camcorder using the regular 8mm tapes forever using VS11.5+ and my firewire 1394. It has never failed until now.
After I click on the Capture tab I click on ¡§Capture video¡¨ and it hangs, then I get the stupid Microsoft message asking me if I want to send them the errors and the program closes.
I cannot find my disks to reinstall VS 11 so I downloaded the new VS PRO trial thinking it will solve my problem. It did not so now I have two VS products that cannot capture.
Here is what I know.
1. I have a P4 XP system with 1GB RAM and 450GB free HD space and 256MB video card
2. I¡¦ve updated my DirectX drivers yesterday
3. I have updated MS Media Player
4. I have updated Flash yesterday
5. My drivers for my firewire card are up to date
6. Videostudio and Windows MovieMaker both crash when trying to capture video.
7. My WebcamDV and Adobe Premiere capture great which means my firewire is working. Premiere captures beautifully which is my alternative capture software (Why am I not using Premiere for the whole project? I need something now and I just started learning Premiere and the curve is too high for this short of timeframe.)
8. I installed XP service pack 3 in the timeframe between when it worked and now and I know that SP3 was supposed to fix some TV capture problems. I wonder if it created other capture problems.
9. I installed some DRM removal software that I removed yesterday without change
I still get the same problem.

I can think of two things off the top of my head.
1. Use System Restore to restore your system to when it captured properly.
2. Continue using the capturing alternative that works and import the clips into VS for editing.

System hangs on "Capture Video"
I have a similar problem. I have just upgraded my hardware which includes a TV tuner card ( Fusion DVB-T) and installed VS 11.5. But when I try to capture from my VHS player thru the tuner card, the whole system just hangs as soon as I click on "Capture Video"
I have to reboot the system to clear the hang up but can never get to nominate the video capture source etc.
As it is new system, I can't restore a previous workpoint in Vista
I have 4Gb RAM, Intel core 2 duo 2.53GHz so capacity should be OK.
