Ran an MS program called DECCHECK.exe. It's a Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility. Interestingly, all Ulead or Fusion decoders show up as being incompatible with XP Media Center Edition or Media Player 10 (I'm using WMP 9).
Can this be extrapolated to mean that for some reason these decoders are incompatible with XP in general?
The only compatible decoder shown is the Cyberlink video/SP decoder which I just installed. Haven't reinstalled Fusion or VS as yet, going to remove all hardware that didn't come with the computer first.

Hi Ken,
I think the DECCHECK.exe results are something of a red herring in your circumstances, and not cause for concern - since you are using XP Home Edition, and Media Player 9.
It's an interesting result for users who do have MP10 and XP Media Center Edition, however.

Hi,
Just installed some codecs, message came up on screen stating 3 direct show filters broken, do you want to remove the reference from the registry, clicked yes, why not I've tried everything else.
I installed XP Home SP3 but with NEC ID checks missing along with the hidden sector I don't think all the drivers from my drivers disc are being installed and without the software originally in the hidden sector I cannot access any other original software, including the master CD recovery disks software. Apparently 2004 Backup MYPC is missing. Tried a later version but it's not backward compatible. Great!
Maybe time to return the computer to the retailer and push for a refund because the restoration software is certainly not doing what it says it will do, restore to "as purchased condition". Might get someone moving.
cheers,

Hi Ken,
I've never been a big fan of the "as purchased" condition of most pc's. They tend to be larded up with all manner of crap, like AOL and Symantec trials, which I usually spend quite a bit of time getting rid of.
When I finally got round to doing a "clean install" of XP on my desktop pc, it significantly speeded it up. Having then installed just the programs I wanted, it also reduced the possibility of conflicts.
All of the major manufacturers - HP, Dell, Gateway and so on, have pretty good web sites where it's easy to download all the necessary drivers.
If your motherboard uses an Intel chipset, the Intel site is also excellent.
What you can't get this way is a copy of the programs that came with the pc. On my own HP, I deleted the recovery partition, but got a set of about 12(!) Recovery CD's from HP - free of charge. These CD's could be used to restore the pc without the recovery partition. Your own pc looks to be of similar vintage to my p4 2.8c, so I'd say there's a good chance you could get similar discs - unless the pc is from a small manufacturer not one of the "Tier One" makes.

UPDATE:
Got absolutely nowhere with various XP OS, FusionHDTV (6 updates), Video Studio and all NEC's updated drivers.
Returned to retailer and was advised that the hidden sector and files in it is not part of the "deal" but they can restore it, at a cost and no they will not supply the disks to do it. It's their technician's job.
I have restored XP using the NEC disk and then installed the NEC drivers from the second disk and then updated drivers but the problems remains.
1. Video Studio (8, 9 & 11 demo) and as I recently found out, Windows Movie Maker, simply cannot find BDA tuner 1.
2. Access to NEC's original software is now limited to some pretty useless and dated software.
The "as purchased" system (with the hidden sector) worked fine and the only thing now missing is the hidden sector. 1 + 1 = 2?
From my discussions with the retailer it would seem my grasp of the English language is somewhat lacking so I include the following paragraph from the restoration section of NEC's Quick Start Guide (page 36) and ask if others read this paragraph as I do.
Standard System Restore
The standard system restore option of the Recovery Program resets your system to the original factory
settings. All files that were on the drive when you purchased your system will be restored. All files you
have added or created yourself and all changes made to the original files will be lost after the recovery
process! Your hard disk will be exactly the same as when it left the factory.

Having spurned by original suggestion that you scan your boot-up sequence for some sort of reference to a recovery module, can you confirm that you actually at least took a look to see if there was one there across the bottom of the CMOS/BIOS screen. You can use the Pause/Break key to stop the BIOS screens from speeding through as they usually do...

Sorry Ken, I had looked at the boot sequence but finding no reference to any recovery I failed to mention it, my apologies.
I had started to doubt the Fusion card so installed Power Cinema 5. Haven't played with it much other than to scan for channels, worked fine.

Here's one for you Ken.
Reformatted drive C: clean install of NEC OEM XP home SP2 and drivers (didn't bother about hidden sector), installed FusionHDTV software and VS11.
Tested VS11:
VS11 - The BDA Tuner is now selectable, scans and finds channels and captures TV via the Fusion card like a dream. Composite capture preview looks great - click on capture video and cannot start the capture graph.
Installed VS9 and tested.
VS9 still doesn't show BDA Tuner but composite input works fine for video capture.
WHAT THE!!!!!!

Hi all,
Still at it!
Even a new machine didn't fix the problem. I copied VS11 installation disk to HD and started installing VS11 piece by piece. Got to AVControlSDk and was advised of a self registration error. This error does not show up at all with the full installation even though the registration process still fails. Checked registry and found 2 files not registered (IVIVIDEO.ax and Dispsvr.dll).
Considering the only capture plug available to VS11 is IVI then I figured the registration of these two files was probably of some importance.
Eventually got them both registered and hey presto, VS11 actually works, well I'll be damned.
Now BDA Tuner 1 is selectable and the channel scanner works. Still doesn't explain why VS 8 and 9 still won't work but hey, one program that works as it's supposed is better than none.
Googled around and found this problem has been around for some time and that a fix is available but links I have checked no longer work.
Any one know where I can obtain this fix?
