Playing a DVD I need to make on a television

Post by xlx_sloppyjoe_xlx »

I need to make a DVD from Video Editor, to play on any television, no matter what size the screen is. What setting will I need to use, when I first start making the DVD? Because the last one I made, the edges were cut off of the television, when it all fit in Video Editor. Any help would be awesome! Thanks.

This is normal

What you described is "normal"

The edges fall in the "Overscan" area (the outer edges of what you see on your computer). Unfortunately, the outer edges are not viewable during playback on a tv. When you check your preferences, you will see a "Title Safe" percentage -- this outer edge is what they are referring to, so that you keep your "Titles" within a specific boundary (avoiding the edges).

You just have to plan accordingly, knowing that about 10% on the outside edges will not be viewable on a TV (the percentage can vary from TV to TV).

If the overscan is a big issue and you want all of your footage to be displayed on your TV, you can always add the Cropping 2D filter to your whole project. As GeorgeW said, 10% is the general rule for most TV's. But not all TV's display the same, some more-some less. To use the Cropping filter apply H and W to 95 for 5% safe area and 90 for 10% and make sure Stationary box and Fill Color box(Black) is checked. Now, set keys with the same values for beginning and end. In preview window, you should see your video bordered by black. The H and W values will determine the size of this border. Then render file to a DVD compliant MPEG2 file and author using your DVD software. Depending on how much your particular TV model cuts off, by doing this procedure you will see either: a) all of your desired footage b) all and some of the newly created black border c) just a little bit of the original footage maybe cropped. Hope this helps.

On the right side of the screen you will see the Production Library. Use dropdown box and select Video Filters>All. Then search for the Cropping2D filter among all the other thumbnails. Drag Cropping filter and place it on top of your video file on the timeline. This opens the filter dialog and you should see your source and preview window. Follow the info from the earlier post and you'll be set.
