Slow startup after upgrade to Ultimate. "Initializing

Post by BBBrox »

Hello,

I searched but couldn't find this answered elsewhere, my apologies if it has been.

After upgrading (well, actually uninstalling X2 and installing X2 Ultimate, as it wasn't an upgrade version), PSP now takes about 1-2 minutes to get past the splash screen. The first time at least. If I stop and start PSP it takes about 10-20 seconds to get past. The image that I am opening appears behind the splash screen (just to tease me, I think), but the hourglass makes me wait until the splash is gone before being able to do anything.

It does fine until it gets to 'Initializing UI' and then it seems to take forever. CPU cycles for PSP are at 50% (which seems to be the max PSP will go, as 'system idle' is at ~48%).

Originally I though MediaOrganizer was the culprit, but after removing all of my photo directories from it's hands, it now sits quietly. It would be nice to disable it all together, but I haven't figured how to do that yet. Is that possible? I use PSP simply for editing, not for organizing or searching.

Thanks for any help,
Christopher.

Christopher,

I don't know of any particular issue as you've described. I too uninstalled X2 before installing X2 Ultimate and actually have seen quite an improvement in the time it takes to launch and initialize the program to a usable state. I can give you my statistics but as you know it will be an apples v. oranges comparison since our systems and so many other factors differ.

Time from launch to usable state: Typically about 10 to 20 seconds, when first launched after rebooting system. Typically about 4 seconds when re-launched thereafter.

System CPU during PSP initialization: Peaks at about 20%
PSP specific CPU after initialization (program running but idle): MediaCataloger.exe @ 0% CPU and Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo.exe @ 0% CPU.

Memory Usage: MediaCataloger.exe @ 4.3mb, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo.exe @ 40.5mb

I've disabled Photo Downloader so I can't provide any info on that particular process.

As far as resolving the issue is concerned, you might have to experiment with disabling various non-essential Windows processes until you are able to determine (through elimination) which (if any) are responsible for the slowdown.

Delete the Organizer database using the instructions at http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightn ... qid=762173.
Check for, and delete any XI database you might find as well... even if you don't have XI installed, there could be an old version hanging around from an old trial of either XI or Snapfire.

Thank you everyone for your help.

After posting my issues, things around here got extremely busy, both business & personal, and thankfully mostly for the better! Highlights include a new baby boy! :-)

My PSP issues have not change, but I will finally now be able to spend on time looking into the problem. Thanks for your suggestions... I will be giving them all a try.

Minor update: sometimes when PSP starts, it actually 'loops' indefinitely while "initializing UI"... CPU @ 50%. ctrl-shift-esc, close the program, and when I reopen the program it open in a couple seconds. Odd.

I will post my results when I start to play around with things.

Sorry about the multiple posting - database error message when I tried to submit... I assumed, incorrectly I see now, that the message were posted.

Good News.

The problem seems to be solved - removing the old database files seems to have done the trick. The first time startup after took a little longer (rebuilding cache) but quick-startups after that.

Thanks!
