JVC's new camcorders appear to record in AVCHD or HD MPEG2 (HDV?).
Models GZ-HD30 & GZHD40.

Wow, a camcorder manufacturer actually dealing with the AVCHD editing problem!
Pity they don't have optical image stabilisation, but otherwise great looking camcorders that are highly rated. The only difference between them seems to be the hard drive size, so I'd prefer the one with the smaller drive.
I just managed to order a Canon HV30 online for $309 though - so if the retailer actually delivers at that price, I'll have to wait before getting a JVC! I expect to have to battle for it, however, since they have yet to send an email confirmation of the order. Next thing will no doubt be a phone call tomorrow from a sales person asking me if I realised that my camcorder was a special Japanese spec model with a low capacity battery....

I can't understand why a manufacturer would hobble a camera of this class with a feature such as digital IS.

re. data volumes etc.
My Panasonic SD1 (now replaced with the SD9 at 1/2 what I paid for my SD1

) does ~40 minutes on a 4GB SD (class 4). The new SD9 claims to have USB mastering built in, so you can (in theory) plug an external USB HDD in, and have as much storage as you need. The upgrade is very tempting, but frankly, the results from my SD1 are good enough to wow most people, so there are a few other toys higher up on the shopping list
I like using SD cards - small, compact, slip in my pocket, if my camcorder got nicked/dropped/drowned/etc. (it gets taken to some quite silly places) I still have the data.
